When I come to the Acme Cafe I know one thing I’ll be getting is a great dessert list and a unique daily fresh sheet that is comfort food focused with an updated twist. I came here with Mary Sheridan for a relaxing bite and some good conversation. Mary had an enjoyable meal at Phnom Penh before I met up with her so she kept it light but I was hungry so I ordered the daily Quiche and dessert of course!

My plate came with a side of the daily soup. I’m not sure what kind it was but it looked and tasted like a carrot and had chickpeas in it. Whatever the variety of soup it was delicious and I nearly licked the cup clean.

The salad on the plate was really refreshing and the pea shoots were a great touch. The vinaigrette had a great tang to it and it looked and tasted like a mustard based dressing. A couple of endive spears made up the rest of the salad.

I’ve never had the Quiche from the Acme cafe before but I saw another diner eating it as I was looking over the menu and it looked really good. The type changes daily so they really keep things fresh. It was a great mix of potatoes, bacon and cheddar cheese, the purple potatoes really surprised me and were a great touch. The pastry was buttery and flaky, it really was a pleasure to eat. The rest of the ingredients were a solid choice, how can you go wrong with bacon and cheddar cheese.

For dessert we split a couple of pieces of pie, black cherry pie was my choice. The black cherry’s surprised me-I was expecting that traditional red cherry pie. this pie was absolutely delicious, it was more on the sweet side rather than tart and I loved how plump the cherry’s were. Crust wise we had a textbook crust that Julia Child would approve of-flaky, buttery and not tough or overworked.

The big thing I love about the Acme is how inventive they are with their cake, pie and pretty much all there other delicious desserts. Mary’s choice pie wise was the mango cream pie. With the fruitiness of the mango with the creaminess of the pie this was a nice treat. While I loved the flavor of this pie I liked the cherry pie more, it would seem that the pie didn’t cool down fully before serving-the filling was warm and the bottom crust was on the soggy side.
Lunch and dessert at the Acme Cafe were a perfect interlude to a beautiful day, we both really enjoyed ourselves. If you’re looking for some great comfort food including some of the best pie and cake around check out the Acme Cafe.
