Basil’s Subs

One of the newer restaurants to hit the Denman Street area in the West End is serving up something a little different for the area-sandwiches!  Basil’s Subs took over an old Cookies by George location and really changed up the white and red interior to what you see above.  They offer a selection of sandwiches but what caught my eye was a daily special of theirs-a pulled beer or pork sandwich for $7.98.

First up we have the pulled pork sandwich with creamy coleslaw on a ciabatta bun.  There pulled pork was great.  The meat was cooked down really well and it was sitting in a warmer soaking in sauce.  The sauce was slightly on the sweet side but they put a chipotle BBQ sauce that helped balance out the sweetness.  Creamy coleslaw made up the rest of the sandwich and I’m a fan, the cabbage was sliced nice and thin and the dressing was nice and creamy with good seasoning.  I must say that I love their bread, it has a great crust on it and the inside is just the right denseness for sandwiches like these.  Size wise this was it fit perfectly in a rectangle takeout box so it’s a great value for $7.98.

The pulled beef sandwich with BBQ sauce and creamy coleslaw was delicious.  The beef was braised just like the pork and it definitely melted in my mouth.  The sandwich was sauced with a BBQ sauce that had a bit of bite to it but the creamy coleslaw worked out the heat.  There is something that I love about a braised beef sandwich, the beef flavor is so deep and rich it really is a nice change from pulled pork.

Both of my sandwiches were great and I’d recommend Basil’s Subs to anyone in the area looking for a lunch that is both delicious and won’t break the bank.
