It’s time for week 2 of the Recipe to Riches show/contest and this time it’s all about Savoury and Snacks. When I was watching the episode I was really looking forward to Stephen Childs product making it through, he came up with a chili that was in-cased in polenta and deep fried-the perfect chili bite. Again the item that made it to market was slightly different from the show, they kept the chili but have put in a whole wheat and cornmeal crusted pocket pie.
They come individually wrapped in a special microwave safe packaging that enables browning of the product-I’ve saw it with some brands of frozen mini pizza’s, for my purposes I cooked them in the oven for 20 minutes at 375 degrees.
After letting them sit for a couple of minutes I dug in. The Chipotle Chili Slams have an alright amount of filling but I think there could have been a touch more and the chili was on the dry side that was especially noticeable in the beans. I really did like the pastry with the cornmeal flavor and I can appreciate the whole wheat from a health aspect but it added a dryness to the pastry. The spice level for these is mild for an adult but I wouldn’t give one to a child who isn’t familiar with spicy foods.
With the 2nd week wrapped up on Recipe to Riches I can’t wait to see what comes out of the main course category. As for this product, I thought it was alright and for $4.99 for 4 Chipotle Chili Slams there a decent snack and a change from having a frozen burrito but I don’t think I’d buy them again.
