Sophie’s Cosmic Cafe

This past weekend a trip to West 4th was in order with my Food Wife Melissa for some Hot chocolate Festival action but some brunch was in order first. The last time we tried to make a visit to Sophie’s in the evening and got as far as across the street when the Closed sign went up so brunch here was a no brainer.

We were greeted by the friendly but busy staff, the place was fully packed and wanting a seat inside we waited about 5 minutes and were shown to our table. The menu is a pretty standard diner menu with all the classics you would expect to find for breakfast, lunch or dinner and healthy options are plentiful.  The decor is one of the reasons to come here and I found myself getting lost looking at everything, I spotted one thing after another from my childhood-the Pee Wee Herman dolls as well as the Ghost Buster’s toys brought a smile to my face.

I grabbed a coffee while cruising the menu. The coffee is fresh and they do a great job at keeping it topped up but at $2.79 I think it’s kinda pricey.

Melissa got the 2 Free Range Eggs any style served with bacon, breakfast sausages or ham, home fries and toast for $9.09.  Overall she enjoyed her food and everything was cooked properly.  One thing that did stand out was Sophie’s home-made ketchup’s out of this world.

I got the Deluxe Veggie Omelette, Sophie’s veggie omelette has steamed spinach, Spanish sauce, sautéed onions and mushrooms served with black beans, home fries and toast for $11.99.  This was one big plate of food I must say.  The home fries were all right but could have been cooked a bit longer on the flat top to make them more crisp.  The omelette was light and fluffy, it’s size also caught my eye-it was packed with filling.  When I took my first bite the spinach kinda overpowered all the other ingredients flavor wise but when I got a bite of everything at once things were OK, I really liked the Spanish sauce and wish there was more of it.  Having the black beans on the plate was something different and nice.

Overall we had a nice, filling meal that didn’t break the bank at Sophie’s and are going to come back for dinner when in the area next.
