I’ve been to Save On Meats Diner a few times since they opened but I haven’t been in since they were featured on the Food Network show Diners, Drive-in’s and Dives a year ago. My buddy Shane has seen the Triple D feature as well as the series on OWN featuring the diner and meat shop and has wanted to make a visit so I was more than happy to join him for a taste of Food Network fame.
For my lunch I went with the Triple D featured Smoked Turkey Pot Pie that is served with mashed potatoes, gravy and a side of peas and carrots. When it was brought to the table the presentation put a smile on my face, I really liked the little baking dish. Digging in to the pot pie the crust was the first thing I noticed, cooked nicely and just the right thickness but it was a separate item (not baked with) the pie filling so the nice dish is just looks and not function. The filling had a good mix of veggies inside and a good amount of turkey was used but the filling was luke warm at best. The mashed potatoes were smooth and gravy was flavored nicely but again they were also suffering from temperature issues as well.
My buddy Shane had the Damn Fine Ruben with a side of extra crispy fries (on his request). I’ve had this sandwich before and liked it quite a bit, Shane enjoyed it flavor wise but one thing we both noticed was the small portion size of the fries for a side on for $12 sandwich there could be a bit more.
We both had good meals from a flavor stand point and my buddy was happy to eat at a place featured on the Food Network but from my past visits and other inconsistency’s I’ve had I’m not in a rush to come back.

$12 for a sandwich!? I still can’t get over how expensive restaurant prices are in Canada sometimes. But Save-On Meats is worth it! What a great establishment! Their sandwich token program really helps those on the Downtown Eastside.
We also like the sandwich token program, after our meal we added $20 to our bill for tokens that we gave to the charitable organizations Save On works with to distribute. The food in the diner on the other hand has consistency issues that need to be addressed.
