We really are lucky here in Vancouver to have one Italy’s finest desserts made by someone as passionate about gelato as James from Bella Gelateria. James Coleridge takes his craft seriously and is the 2012 Gelato Festival Winner beating some of the oldest and best Gelateria’s in Italy on their own turf. The thing that makes this gelato so special in my eye’s is the consistency of the product, it’s smooth and not icy in any way.
This is the Limoncello Cheesecake Gelato that James created for the Vancouver Foodster Cheesecake Challenge. This gelato was flavor packed that’s for sure. The first thing that you tasted was the tang from the cheesecake flavor then the sweetness with the limoncello finish.
Next up is the Espresso Gelato that uses La Futura espresso from Milano Coffee. I love coffee flavored anything and this gelato didn’t disappoint. The flavor of the espresso hits your palate right when you take a bite but it’s really smooth and dissipates quickly. This is one of my favorite flavors from Bella.
This is a trio of gelato I had on a recent Vancouver Foodster Tasting Plates Desserts event. The lightest in color is the Limoncello Cheesecake, next is a Chocolate with Scotch in it and lastly is a Toasted Pecan with a drizzle of Maple Syrup. The chocolate scotch was really strong and not one of my favorites at all, the toasted pecan was the winner for me but I would have loved the maple syrup mixed into the gelato when it was put in the metal container.
In the pink dish is the Salted Caramel gelato. As you know I do love my salted caramel anything but this was my Food Wife’s treat after an amazing sushi lunch at Miku but I did get to taste it. The salt hits your palate right away then you get the flavor of the caramel and the sweetness.
My new favorite is the Michelangelo. James combines mascarpone cheese along with chocolate pieces and a touch of espresso and blends them all together into this delicious flavor. When you take a bite you get the tang from the cheese along with its richness, then the chocolate pieces hit your tongue and melt then the espresso comes in to make this one of the best dishes and flavors of gelato I’ve ever had.
I highly recommend Bella Gelateria for some of the best gelato you will have in your life. The place is small so grab a dish or a cone and enjoy the beautiful waterfront, you will have a smile on your face I guarantee.
