After a delicious lunch and tour of Summerhill Winery and Sunset Bistro we took a drive over to Carmelis Goat Cheese Artisan. Located just past Cedar Creek Estate and St.Hubertus Winery this Okanagan gem is a must visit for anyone who loves goat cheese. The business was opened Ofri and Ofer Barmorby who had a great goad cheese operation in Israel and decided to make the jump to Canada. Just days after Ofri and Ofer received their new goats when they opened their property the terrible Kelowna Mountain Park Fire hit, the community rallied after a radio plea for help and an army of trucks showed up to transport the goats to safety but the entire property was destroyed. The family rebuilt with the full support of the community behind them and have since added to the goat-herd.
Carmelis Goat Cheese Artisan make a wide variety of soft to hard aged goats milk cheese that is all aged in the awesome “cheese cellar”. Many people have fallen in love with Carmelis cheese with it now a regular ingredient with top Kelowna restaurants and a recognized name in BC’s foodie community with Ofri having joined the ranks of BC’s top 40 foodies under 40 (Western Living Magazine 2008).
Carmelis offers cheese tastings as well as a nice selection of goat milk gelato that is out of this world! The small batch production ensures your getting fresh gelato. You can buy all your favorite cheese’s as well in the cheese shop in a variety of sizes. Tasting my way through the cheese my favorite was the goat Gruyère with its full flavor and slight fruitiness. The gelato ranks up there with some of the best I’ve had, the flavors were all varied with the coconut and salted caramel being my favorites.
I really enjoyed my time at Carmelis Goat Cheese Artisan, the passion they have for making the best possible quality product was clear. It is a bit of a drive to get to but I assure you it’s well worth it if you like goat cheese- your sure to get something you can’t find anywhere else!
