Food Truck Trends 2011:Can’t get enough bacon and cupcakes

Perfect cupcake topping, Yum Yum Cupcake Truck (Orlando). Photo courtesy of Droolius blog.

Bacon was far and away one of the most popular ingredients in the food truck scene, with many trucks entirely dedicated to the protein. On the flip side of this flavour profile, we also saw a big boom in sugary sweet mobile cupcakeries. In the most ideal scenario, we even spotted bacon-topped and bacon infused cupcakes for the best combo of salty-sweet deliciousness.

“The Rico” – An all beef hot dog with chunks of Applewood and hickory smoked bacon. Bacon Mania ( Orange County)

If you’ve been following along with us on Twitter, you’ll likely have noticed a compendium of #bacon-related tweets. There was no shortage of bacon news and information in 2011, and we’ve certainly covered a lot of bacon on the show. Whether it’s used as a topping (such as in the case of “The Rico” here from Bacon Mania in Orange County) or simply standing on its own, There’s just a lot of shameless bacon lovin’ happening both online and offline.

It was really no surprise that this major trend in baked goods would extend itself to the food truck arena, and we’re glad it did. We saw some beautiful confections this year, and bacon-topped cupcakes (like this one from the Cupcakin’ machine in Dallas) was definitely on our list of favourites.

Fat Burger on Denman St

Fat Burger is an American chain that has made its way up to Canada about 4 or 5 years ago. With a location on Denman street it’s not far away from my place but to be honest I made a visit here right after they opened years ago and they had a bit of a different menu~and it wasn’t a good thing, the prices for a burger, fries and a drink were over $14 and the value for money wasn’t there, I made the decision not to come back~till a couple weeks ago!

The decor inside is very American Diner and the walls are adorned with record albums from classic American artists and each location has a Wurlitzer Jukebox and the seating consists of booth type seating and some tables.

I ordered up their “Big Fat Deal”, it consisted of a bacon double cheeseburger, an order of their skinny fries and bottomless fountain drinks for $9.99. This was a better priced option that what I had before and made a lot more sense to me for value for money.

After placing your order at the counter your burger is cooked fresh so they give you a number and bring out your meal to your table when it’s ready~nice touch in my eye’s. They have all the usual condiments at the table as well as their brand of MSG free seasoning, I like the fact it’s MSG free but it’s still high in unnecessary salt so use it sparingly.

After waiting for 5 minutes my food was delivered to my table, it’s a nice amount of food and the burger looked like a classic bacon double cheese and would satisfy any burger lover.

The fries here have changed since my first visit~the potato skins are new and they are a bit thicker now, still they were good fries~not soggy and well seasoned but as I got to the bottom of the container they were soft from sitting.

My burger on the other hand was just what a bacon double cheese should be and it definitely kicks the Golden Arches in the butt!, the bun was soft yet it held together throughout the eating of the burger.

It was almost like my burger had a bacon tongue!, the burger size here is very similar to Nimby Burger in Kits, there not as big as Vera’s Burgers but still I didn’t walk away hungry.

With a good meal on this visit I’d come back and try them again,  the restaurant is also really kid friendly, while I was eating dinner a coupe Grandparents came in with 3 little ones and the staff hooked them up with toys to draw on and keep them occupied while waiting for dinner and it totally worked and the kids were quiet with Grandma and Grandpa smiling away!

Joe Fortes Seafood and Chop House

Joe Fortes has been a Vancouver institution for all of my life.  They have a stellar reputation for seafood and amazing service all packed into a beautiful dining space with one of Vancouver best summer rooftop outdoor oasis patio’s.

A bit about Joe Fortes Restarant from their website:

OUR HISTORY
One of Joe Fortes’ many unique qualities is the immediate sense of character and personality that guests recognize the moment they step inside. The large, bright room feels instantly powerful yet inviting, and it’s no coincidence that these qualities were also embodied by the legendary figure that we take our name from – Seraphim “Joe” Fortes.

In 1885, this burly seaman landed upon Vancouver’s shores and settled into a cabin in English Bay. There, Joe quickly became one of Vancouver’s most popular citizens, serving Vancouverites in a variety of ways – first as a bartender and later as Vancouver’s first official lifeguard. Today, he is remembered by a monument near the site of his home, and his popularity lives on inside the welcoming walls of Joe Fortes Seafood & Chop House.

OUR PHILOSOPHY
With our name inspired by a local legend famous for his warm, welcoming nature, we naturally believe that hospitality is a key ingredient in creating a memorable dining experience for our guests. We also firmly believe in engaging in fresh thinking throughout the restaurant, and nowhere more so than on our menus. Such is our commitment to freshness that our kitchen receives daily local deliveries, ensuring that you’re guaranteed to find the freshest ingredients on your plate every day.
THE RESTAURANT
Visit Joe Fortes Vancouver seafood restaurant and you are welcomed into an environment whose vibrant sights and sounds are as enticing as the menu is.

The main dining room is anchored by a soaring horseshoe oyster bar. This Grand Room boasts large, cozy booths, perfect for hosting high-powered lunch or dinner meetings, as well as intimate dinner dates.

From the mezzanine, diners enjoy a bird’s eye view of the action and live musical entertainment below.

The mahogany-walled wine room offers guests a unique and discreet setting in which to enjoy an intimate lunch, or a private corporate celebration.

The more casual side of Joe’s is experienced in the bistro and bar where locals and out-of-towners alike mingle, soak up the live music and keep their eyes open for visiting celebrities.

For a breath of fresh air, guests can step up to Vancouver’s most desirable roof garden and into an urban oasis featuring a living green wall, cozy outdoor fireplace and bustling horseshoe bar. No wonder Joe Fortes is the best seafood restaurant in Vancouver”

@MaryInVanCity and I made a visit in the midst of the Christmas season and it couldn’t have been a better time to have out very first visit for the both of us.

The room was beautifully decorated for the holidays and Christmas carols played throughout, both of us were really blown away with the beauty of the room, seated in the bar area we treated to a great view of the space.

Seating is plentiful here, tables and banquets make up the bar area, up some step lay some more tables and high back booths line the walls.

The service we received was super friendly and attentive from the moment we walked through the door.  After we were presented with our menus we were served with complementary bread with balsamic and house made lobster oil, I thought it was good but it didn’t agree with Mary’s palette.

For appetizers we chose the New England Clam Chowder, this was actually part of my Blue Plate Special as an add on so I had some but Mary happy enjoyed the rest seeing clams aren’t my favorite.  From my taste it was good, the bacon was a nice flavor and not too strong, the chowder was creamy and the potato added some nice thickness to the chowder, usually if one of my friends gets clam chowder I love to snack on these is possible:

the traditional New England Oyster Crackers, not a lot of places have these traditional ones so it was a nice treat for myself and Mary.

For another appetizer I went with the Dungeness Crab Cake with basil lemon aioli for $16.95, this was a killer crab cake, it was loaded with Dungeness crab meat and hardly any filler if any.

I really enjoyed the sauce as well, the lemon didn’t really come through but the basil did, it complimented the crab cake beautifully.  This crab cake was also made with Oceanwise Dungeness crab.

Mary went with some fresh oysters on the half shell, I can’t remember what kind they were but shoe enjoyed them with the house made mignonette but they were also served with classic cocktail sauce and fresh horseradish

She also got one of these oyster treats

A Vodka Oyster Shooter for $8, it had Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco and as she put it~ a nice “meaty” oyster, the vodka came through right away but the flavor of the oyster complimented by the W sauce and Tabasco soon enveloped her mouth~she said that this was very enjoyable.

I was the only one having a main course~Mary had a killer lunch at the new Ensemble Tap before we met up so I was the one doing most of the eating here.  The Blue Plate Special is what I chose and today it was Bourbon BBQ Chicken served with asparagus and white rice for $9.99, the special is served till 4PM and is changed daily, the menus is visible online.

The chicken was boneless thighs and the sauce was really flavorful, the meat was super tender and I just had to use my fork to cut it, the plate had 3 nice big pieces of BBQ chicken, the asparagus was ok and the rice was flavorful for white rice.  It was a great plate for food and for $9.99 it can’t be beat.

I went with a Vanilla Creme Brulee~my Blue plate Special had a $9.99 add on for the soup and a dessert.  The top was nicely caramelized and formed a nice layer on top of the brulee, the custard inside was nice and thick and super rich, the vanilla flavor was subtle and not overpowering.

Mary went with the Berry Pavlova that was filled with banana custard, beautiful berry’s and sweet meringue encased all these delish treats and for $8.50 it was decently priced.

We had a great meal here and would tell anybody who hasn’t been before to make a visit to Joe Fortes for some classic food and impeccable service.

Just a quick note~they DON’T accept Debit cards so you’ll be forced to use a 3rd party cash machine~something that surprised us but all major credit cards are accepted and they are closed over the Christmas holidays.

The Zagat review page for Joe Fortes can be view by clicking this link here and the Joe Fortes website can be viewed here with the option to make reservations online.  Feel free to also check them out on Twitter @JoeFortesVan and their Facebook page .

Hurricane Fiesta from VANEATS.ca

The guy’s weren’t kidding when they said it was going to be one Delish December and it’s going to be one to remember that’s for sure!

The newest dining pass offered from VANEATS.ca is at the Hurricane Grill and it’s called the Hurricane Fiesta, this time around you have 2 locations to choose from-Yaletown or North Vancouver, with packages specific to each location.

You get the option of choosing 2 of 4 delicious huge salads from the menu and an order of bruschetta all for $25, it’s designed for 2 people and you are sure to leave with full belly’s and smiles on your face.

Here is a full description of the menu for you:

Bruschetta – classic made with tomatoes, Parmesan, extra virgin olive oil, basil, balsamic reduction, mozzarella and goat cheese

The Grill Salad –Six oz N.Y. steak on grilled vegetables, spring mix and tossed together with a balsamic reduction

Warm Seafood Spinach – Scallops, prawns, baby shrimp, baby spinach, mandarin oranges and mushrooms, layered with goat cheese and roasted almonds

Ako Salad – Grilled chicken breast, English cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, peppers, feta cheese and rice along with a balsamic vinaigrette

Fiesta Salad – Romaine lettuce, corn, black beans, avocado, blackened chicken, salsa, nacho cheese, sour cream and a cilantro mint dressing

Myself and @MaryInVancity were invited to give the VANEATS.ca Hurricane Fiesta dining pass a try and here is a breakdown of our chow down.

The brushetta was HUGE!, you get 3 pieces and each is piled high with tomatoes, goat cheese and the balsamic drizzle was a great addition to cut the richness of the goat cheese.  It was a great start to our meal and I’d definitely order this again.  Regularly this item is $10.99 on the menu.

Salad wise we chose The Grill with the steak done medium rare.  This was a perfect salad and actually remind me of a grilled meal with the peppers and asparagus, instead of lettuce they use spinach here and it’s a great choice I think and the dressing rounded everything out nicely.  This was enjoyed by both of us and would satisfy any meat and potatoes eater.  Normally this is $16.99 on the menu so it’s a great choice for the dining pass.

lastly we went with the warm seafood spinach salad.  This one put huge smiles on our faces, as you can see its piled mile high with baby shrimp, tail on prawns and nice big scallops, the plate is rounded out with mushrooms, mandarin oranges and roasted almond slices with a mango dressing.  Mary loved this and I quite liked it, it’s one of the most generous salads toppings wise I have ever had the pleasure of laying my hungry eyes on.  Menu wise this bad boy runs $15.99 and will fill you up without weighing you down that’s for sure.

We both really enjoyed this dining pass and the guy’s at VANEATS.ca have been really on the money with offering up creative dining experiences and some of Vancouver’s great restaurants, again the guy’s at VANEATS.ca are giving away 4 Hurricane Fiesta Dining Passes and the details on how to enter are below:

The American CheeseSteak Co.

TV Chef and restaurateur Anthony Sedlak has opened the doors to his newest place-The American CheeseSteak Co. and he’s serving something right up my alley.

The sign say’s it all, the American CheeseSteak Co is totally bringing the authentic Philadelphia tradition and must eat if you’re there-the cheese steak sandwich.  Thinly sliced steak with fried onions and peppers, topped with cheese wiz-that’s the traditional cheese steak but provolone is also another traditional option.  The beauty here is the variations and primo ingredients that take the cheese steak to the next level.

I went with the beef option but they also offer a chicken sandwich and also a vegetarian option and fries & onion rings are also a side with gourmet dips.

Classic Cheese Steak 12″ $11.  I went with the Philly classic in the large size, the meat was super tender and as you can see it was STUFFED in the sandwich.  I also had sautéed onions and mushrooms in my sandwich and in the end I had to use a fork and knife to eat this cuz of the amount of ingredients.  one thing that was a problem was the metal basket the sandwich is in-when you cuz it up you cut thru the was paper and hit the metal of the basket so a plate might be better to serve it on, I would think the smaller size cheese steak would be easier to hold and eat.

ACC Fries $4, hand cut fries with garlic, parsley and Parmesan.  These were pretty good, the garlic isn’t too strong and is mixed up well with the parsley but I couldn’t really taste the parm.

I think Vancouver does have a new tradition from the city of brotherly love and so far it has been embraced with open arms by all us ravenous carnivores who love good comfort food.

Milestones Grill and Bar English Bay

Milestones at English Bay is a longtime standard summertime hangout for me because of the killer patio overlooking English Bay and the tasty drinks they offer. With the renovations done to the chain the interior is like the Robson street location which makes for great daytime dining and intimate dimly lit evening dinners.

I live right around the corner from this location so it’s really convenient and a solid stand by when I have a late night at work and want dinner later in the evening without going to a loud bar.

Heineken Draft $7.99.  I started out with a big beer and from what they had on tap this was the most appealing choice for me.  The size of the glass surprised me-it’s one big beer so I got my moneys worth.

Crispy Asian Chicken Bites $9.99-tossed in a Thai chili sauce with cucumber and toasted sesame seeds.  I really liked these boneless chicken bites, the sauce was more heat than sweet and the bites were all crispy and juicy.  I’d defiantly order this again.

Milestones Beef Burger with the American topping add-on $12.99+$1.50.  All the burgers come with the usual lettuce, onion, tomato and pickle, you also get your choice of fries or salad-I added the extra .99 for yam frites.

The burger is juicy and the double smoked bacon was nice and fried perfectly.  The yam frites were so so-they reminded me of cremated yam strings!, the plate comes with a southern aioli that is really heavy on the cumin.

Milestones continues to be a go to choice for a sold meal and the menu is big enough without reading like a novel so you’re sure to find something that will satisfy your hunger.

Chronic Tacos Granville Street

The newest addition to the downtown eats scene is the taco chain Chronic Tacos.

The story of the company  in a nut shell is this-”Chronic Tacos, Inc. was founded in 2001 by Daniel A. Biello and Randall L. Wyner. The idea came after a long night of revelry in a west Newport Beach , CA shopping center close to where the friends had lived for the past 12 years. The concept was fast, fresh, made to order Mexican food that was far superior to that of the competition, with large portions and fresh salsa at a great price”~Quoted from there website.

As a result you basically have the Subway of tacos-not that there’s anything wrong with that but it’s standard food and pretty Americanized I found when compared to other Mexican taco shops around town. The menu is soft shell corn or flour tortilla tacos, burritos and Tex mex southwestern fare. The staff is really friendly and ready to answer any questions you might have so they get good marks for service and the decor of the restaurants is clean and sports bar like with flat screens on the wall so it’s great to catch the game. The Granville location is the most unique I’d say-the space has really high ceilings and the walls are adorned with graffiti art, crystal chandeliers, deep red walls and black leather seating-kinda bordello of blood if you ask me but it’s suits the vibe of street outside.

Food wise I went with a couple of standard items-a couple of there  “fatty tacos”, my personal favorite of the real Mexican style tacos is the Al Pastor-pork that is slow cooked with pineapple-melt in your mouth delicious and theirs here is nice and spicy and I decided to get their signature fish taco-beer battered mahi mahi and topped traditional baja style-they say their’s are the best so I had to see how it shapes up to Tacofino’s take on heaven.

The Al Pastor taco $3.79~slow braised pork with pineapple in a spicy sauce, this is one of my favorite ways to have pork and especially in a taco, the pineapple is braised with the meat and by the time it’s finished its nicely broken down and in the sauce.  I’d have this taco again but with shredded cabbage instead f the lettuce like I had here, I also had tomatillo salsa on this and theirs has a nice kick.  They offer free guacamole on all of there tacos but you have to specifically have to ask for it and its a must~Chronic tacos guacamole is really good and made fresh daily.

The Baja Style Fish Taco $3.79, beer battered mahi mahi with shredded cabbage, cheese and pico de gallo with a squeeze of lime, I flaked out here and forgot to ask for guacamole, this taco was alright but nowhere near the best in the city, the fish was kind of flavorless and tasted just of fried and was kinda of dry so the guacamole really would have added some needed moisture, on the bright side the salsa here isn’t as wet as Tacofino’s which get’s them points but Tacofino wins with their tempura battered fish.

At the end of the day my meal was all right and I’ll stop in with friends to try the other meat offerings they have but I’m going to be getting my baja style fish tacos from another joint.

The Market Grill on Granville Island

On my quest for good burgers around the city~or whatever city I’m in for that matter I’m always on the look out, one of the places that has been around for a while is the Market Grill located in the main eating area at the Granville Island Public Market.

The style of the place is straight up 80′s and hasn’t changed since they opened I’d venture to say but that’s all good because I’m here for the food!.

The menu is good old-fashioned beef, chicken burgers balanced with a side of salmon, veggie hot dog and sausage options if you’re not looking for that traditional burger, I also see they offer breakfast here as well.

I’ve stuck to the beef burgers mainly here but on one visit I met a lady next to me from California who had the salmon burger and she said it was petty good.

The Market Special $9.25, mushrooms, onions, special sauce, swiss cheese and tomato served with wedge fries.  This was a really good burger, the flame grilled parry had that great charbroiled flavor, the mushrooms and grilled onions added a nice moisture to the burger and the bun held up nicely.  The fries here are wedge style and have a great crisp outside with a nice fluffy middle and are nicely salted~great fries at this joint that’s for sure.

The Deluxe Classic $8.15, loaded with relish, onion, pickle, mustard, mayo and tomato’s.  This was their standard burger I take it and the meat on this occasion was kind of dry and the chunks of onion took away from the burger.  On the bright side~the fries were great again!.

I’m looking forward to trying the Californian burger, other than that I’d suggest the Market Special if you’re looking for something really good and a solid burger.

Back To The Bar

I went back to the bar this week~the Stackhouse Burger Bar that is and MaryInVancity came along with me to satisfy that great burger hunger and below are the menu items I had and some that we shared.

Seeing it was Friday and hot as all heck out I had a couple Pabst Blue Ribbon’s and at $4 each it’s a good deal for a downtown restaurant I think, the beer went well with the burger and fried items of deliciousness I had, Mary went with the Stewart’s Root Beer at $4 each.  Photo credit to Mary for the root beer pic and the picture of the aioli dips.

Hand Cut Fries $5, these are made fresh daily from russet potatoes and come with your choice of flavored aioli and ketchup, they were crisp on the outside and soft inside, well seasoned and didn’t get soggy~great for dipping that’s for sure.

Onion Rings $7, made fresh daily from scratch, the seasoning is really nice and the breading is not to heavy, it stands the onion ring test~when you take a bite the whole onion doesn’t come out of the ring.  These as well come with your choice of aioli and I ordered these as an extra item and chose the fries as my side with my burger~I’ve heard from other people who say these were a must have and I can also agree~get the rings!!!.  Dip wise the I really like the truffle aioli~it wasn’t overpowering with truffle oil and there is finely minced pieces of black truffle in it, the miso was also nice but not my favorite~the miso used has a lot of flavor to it so it’s not a weak tasting dip~reminded me of a mix of miso and soy.

The Kobe Burger $21, a 6.5oz Kobe beef patty topped with Guinness Cheddar, caramelized onions, truffle aioli and butter lettuce served on those kick ass brioche buns.  I really enjoyed this burger, it was juicy from the extra beautiful Kobe beef and the truffle aioli went well with the richness of the burger and sweetness of those caramelized onions, toppings wise for the rest of the burger there was butter lettuce, tomato and a bit of sliced raw onion.  At the end of the day I really enjoyed this and would order it again when I’m looking for a treat.

The Pancetta Burger $14, all the same toppings as the Stackhouse burger minus the mushroom, again another great burger that was juicy and satisfied that burger hunger.

Deep Fried Ice Cream $9, Vanilla ice cream wrapped in a brioche dough, this baby is then deep-fried to perfection and sprinkled with cinnamon sugar and a kahlua chocolate sauce is served with it and fresh fruit.  The center was still nicely frozen and the crust provided a nice crunch and texture with the soften vanilla bean ice cream, I could pick up the taste of toasted coconut as well.  The dish gets points for freshness and presentation in my eyes but I’ve realized I don’t like my ice cream deep-fried!.

At the end of the day with my food and the burger Mary ordered our meal came to $76, some might say that’s a bit high but if you went to any of the other top-notch burger place you’d be paying about the same.

Mc Donalds new Supreme Chicken Sandwiches

Mc Donald’s Canada has launched a new line of premium or as they say “supreme” chicken sandwich’s this August. Coming in 3 different flavor combinations~Tangy Thai, Mushroom and Swiss and the classic chicken BLT~both available in crispy or grilled.

The sandwiches are oblong and the in this case the crispy chicken patty~I don’t know if I can call it a breast

it was all white meat and not the same texture as the Mc Chicken patty but at the end of the day it was an enjoyable eat and nicely seasoned.

As you can see I went with the crispy BLT sandwich $5.81 incl HST for the sandwich alone

the sandwich is a good size even if you’re a big eater, it’s on a soft tender bun that is special for the supreme sandwich line and its all nicely wrapped so you don’t wear it!

This ended up being a great chicken BLT and I really enjoyed my sandwich, I’d definitely order this one again.

The next day I stopped into the same Mc Donald’s that I got the above sandwich from and picked up the Swiss Mushroom Melt with the crispy chicken patty, this time there was a different crew working at the store~it was the Canada fire works at the Celebration Of Light so they were also busy, that being said this is that greeted me when I opened the box:

not wrapped nicely like this one:

so I peeled back the wrapping like a crappy Christmas gift:

now having worked in fast food in my teenage years this sad-looking “supreme” chicken sandwich screams “WHO PUT ME TOGETHER HATES THERE JOB!!”, the sandwich was sloppily put together, the lettuce was brown, wilted and frankly gross~I took it off and thus most of the sauce came off with it and half the cheese was in the box.

After doing some plastic surgery to my food I ate a couple bites, I wasn’t as happy this time as I was when I had the BLT, the mushrooms on this tasted like they were out of a can~limp and really soft, I went to put my sandwich down and then noticed this on the underside of the wrapper:

not what I like in my food, keep your hair on your body whoever cooked my food and head back for retraining at head office because you can’t make food to spec.

This all being said I’m going to wait to get the Thai sandwich when the regular crew is working and my Swiss sandwich is where it belongs~in the garbage.

Updated Post:

so it’s the next day and things are back to normal in the West End after the fireworks. I stopped in and grabbed a Tangy Thai Supreme Sandwich, I was hoping for a better experience and here it is in pictures:

someone missed the demo on how to build new sandwiches!

whats under the hood?

REALLY!, roasted red peppers and 4 1/2 moon cucumber slices topped off with sweet Thai chilli sauce.

overall not taking appearance into account because if it was made text-book I still wouldn’t have liked it, it was crying for some lettuce and some kind of mayo to cut the chilli sauce. This was my least favorite sandwich and crispy is the way to go with these bad boys~the patty fits the bun better. Also below is a lesson why these sandwiches should be wrapped in the paper the are supposed to come in:

it’s freaking messy and the ingredients fall out~not good when 50% of the veg falls into the box but hey~there wasn’t any hair in my food this time!. To see properly made sandwiches check Foodology.ca and Diana’s take on Mc Donald’s new offering’s.
