Great Greek In Gastown

Harry Kambolis’s Nu Greek has been a favorite of mine ever since I had the delish homemade pita wraps when they had their street cart on Granville, well times have changed and the street cart is gone but they’ve moved indoors with locations on Robson street and now with a location in Gastown where So’Cal’s sandwich deli used to be.

The space is larger than Nu’s other locations and the long communal table is a great touch, in addition to the great souvlaki and dips they offer up a daily selection of fresh-baked pastry’s, desserts, breakfast options and some extra choices in proteins for your meal like octopus.

On the day I stopped in Harry Kambolis himself was cooking up the food, I really like it when the owner is in-house but when he’s making your food it’s totally awesome!

I ordered a souvlaki wrap and a small Greek salad, the salads are really reasonably priced-mine was $4.  The salad was made up from simple, fresh and great ingredients, the tomatoes were cherry tomatoes, the feta was placed nicely on top and had that perfect salty/creamy taste that this salad needs and the dressing had that nice acidic twang.  I can’t wait to try all the other salads on the menu.

The thing that I loved about Nu when I first ate at the street cart was the pita-it’s the star of the show in my eyes, freshly made from scratch everyday it’s a reason to come to Nu alone!  On my visit there were 3 different pita to choose from-original, oregano and a sun-dried tomato pita-I went with the oregano and my protein choice was lamb.  I’ve had this wrap before but with a plain pita and absolutely loved it, the homemade tzatziki sauce is thick and rich tasting without being too heavy and the lettuce and tomatoes are super fresh just like with the salad.  Needless to say I gobbled this bad boy up and can’t wait for more!

I also picked up some pita to take home with me to use with dinner that night and Harry was nice enough to throw some extra goodies in my bag.

On the savory side there was a mini spanakopita, the phyllo was buttery and flaky and the filling was nicely balanced between the spinach and feta-I could eat about a dozen of these with some beer!

Next up is the Baklava Muffin, this was really lemony, there was zest all throughout the muffin and it went well with the sweet glaze that was on top, this muffin top was crunch on the outside and rich and buttery on the inside.  I’d definitely go back for this again.

Lastly Harry included a current and fig scone with an apricot glaze.  Again this was a winner, the current flavor was really pronounced and the fig added a beautiful sweetness, the scone itself was nice and crumbly but not dry like the desert.

If you find yourself in the Gastown area part of town and are looking for a solid lunch that won’t break the bank or in need of a sweet mid afternoon treat I highly recommend Nu.

Cadeaux Bakery~An Oasis Of Heaven

I’ve been wanting to come here ever since I saw Erin Ireland’s Instagram feed that was full of these sinful treats from a new bakery on the edge of the Downtown Eastside and Gastown~the wonderful Cadeaux Bakery!

It’s an open concept bakery where you can see all the deliciousness being created and there are about 6 or 7 nice sized tables for you to dine-in on your wonderful choices.

The large display case is constantly refilled with treats throughout the day and they all looked really good!

Through out the display area there are lots of packaged cookies and treats for you to choose from.  I have to go back for one of those salted caramel brownies for sure!

I went with a slice of their rich and decadent chocolate bread pudding and a Americano, for both items after tax the bill was $6 and change so prices are on par with other good quality bakeries.

It was rich and moist throughout and the rum sauce that was drizzled on top was a nice sweet touch to the bread pudding, the chocolate flavor was also good yet it didn’t dominate the bread pudding~a great balance at the end of the day.

I’d say that Cadeaux is going to be a Vancouver institution and I’m looking forward to checking out there other sweet and savory treats!

Acacia Fillo Bar-A Hidden Gem In A Foodies Paradise

Hidden away in Denman Street between Delaney’s Coffee Shop and Fatburger is Acacia Fillo Bar. I’ve walked by here a million times not knowing the hidden gem that was right beneath my eyes.

Opened in 2005 by Vera and Ziggy, Vera is bringing traditional Bulgarian baking and comes from a family in the restaurant business and she a owned a successful restaurant and catering company in her home country before coming to Canada.

The service here is warm and friendly, the staff are ready to answer any questions you might have, it’s a comfortable, relaxing place to enjoy breakfast and read the paper with your coffee and a lot of the locals seem to believe that we well-it was constantly busy on both of my visits and pretty much everyone I saw eat the compliment the chef of how good everything was and I totally agree with them!

The signature dish here is the Banitza, it’s like a layered phyllo pie but the layers are end to end instead of on top of each other~it’s totally delicious and a must try for your 1st visit.

This is the spinach and feta banitza, all of the banitza’s have eggs in them but you state the other fillings more than the egg, the feta used here is from Bulgaria and all the phyllo here is made from scratch, what really got me was this~from a photographers point of view

the individual compartments of flavor and layers of phyllo and how they translate in a  picture~OK now back to the food!, I loved this dish!

It was served with a small spinach salad with balsamic dressing and a side of plain yogurt with pepper~both the salad dressing and yoghurt help cut the richness of the banitza, for $8.50 it was a great meal and a solid value.

Next up is the leek, feta and egg banitza, just like the spinach but leek this time, the flavor on this one was more savory because of the leek and the feta stood out more on this one as well~again another delicious dish and the same price as the spinach and feta banitza.

Lastly I tried something else on the menu~a filled Phyllo, this one was mushrooms and spinach

This was made fresh because they were out at the time, the filling was simple~just spinach and sautéed mushrooms, it was ok but I enjoyed the other items I had more, there were also 2 different sides with this main

a simple salad like with my other meals

and roasted potatoes and yams, these I really liked, the yams were nicely seasoned and so were the potatoes.  This meal was a  bit more than what I had before-$16 and change including a can of pop.

At the end of the day I enjoyed my visits here and am definitely going to make it a regular breakfast spot, if you find yourself in the area and want to try something a little different check Acacia Fillo Bar out, they are also open for dinner and have a selection desserts made in-house as well as catering services available.

Footo Delights

A new bakery has opened in downtown Vancouver and it specializes in handmade croissants, Footo Delights (Fresh Out Of The Oven) is owned and operated by Brenda Yip, a graduate from the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts in Vancouver and SFU Alumni, she has a huge passion for what she does, she puts her heart and soul into the products she creates and it really shows in the final product.

Footo Delight’s  is located on Homer St right near Robson St neat the Vancouver Public Library so it’s super easy to get to and there open early if you’re in the mood to have fresh-baked croissants in the morning.

On a recent stay close by at a local hotel for the Grey Cup I stopped by Footo Delight’s for a bite to eat and to pick up some croissants for breakfast in the morning before the big game.

The croissants I picked up to take back to the hotel were the following:

The classic Cheese Croissant, delicious and flakey, buttery and cheesy!, this was a great croissant and the cheese flavor really came through.

The Spinach and Feta croissant is always a favorite of mine and this one was one of the biggest I have ever had!, it was filled with nice big chunks of salty feta and cooked spinach, again no complaints here.

For a sweet treat I grabbed an Almond Croissant, this one was coated with an apricot glaze that made it a sticky mess to eat but the flavors were great and it would be better enjoyed fresh out of the oven.

For the 3 filled croissants I paid just about $10, it might seem like a much but it’s a hand-made from scratch product with only the finest, freshest ingredients and I think there worth every penny.

The items I had when I was in the bakery were the following:

They offer a selection of croissant sandwiches, I’ve heard great things from @foodologyca about the Turkey Pesto sandwich so I went with that.  For $5.95 it’s a great value and is equally delicious, I had them warm mine in the oven so the croissant was extra flakey and the cheese and tomato were nicely warmed and melted.  The pesto was definitely their flavor wise~it’s straight up pesto and not mixed with mayo like most other places do but all the ingredients worked well together.

Lastly to wrap up a good meal I had one of Brenda’s delsih handmade desserts, I went with the tiramisu, It has whipped mascarpone cheese with lady fingers dipped in a rum/espresso blend and dusted with cacao powder.  This was one damn fine tiramisu!, the mascarpone cheese was super rich and creamy yet really light, the lady fingers were nicely soaked and not complete mush so there was nice texture there.

If you find yourself in the area around the Vancouver Public Library be sure to check out this wonderful small business and show your support.  Right now Footo Delight’s is running a contest via there Twitter account~think of your ideal croissant flavor and submit your idea, if it’s chosen you get a dozen of your flavor to enjoy!, check out there Twitter account here .

Solly’s Bagelry In Mt.Pleasent

Solly’s has been serving up there award winning bagels and Jewish comfort food to Vancouverites for many years now. The area has gone from being a deserted after 6pm business area to a great family filled neighborhood that adds to the charm of Solly’s. There is lots of seating inside and some patio space outside when the weather is nice. The sandwich counter runs along one side of the restaurant and the ordering system is kinda messed up, if you want a sandwich or something to eat in you order at the far end of the counter and pay at the other end but if you want just some bagels to go or a dessert you can order that at the pay area.

Food wise I was in the mood for a sandwich so I went with there full “meat” deal which is a pastrami sandwich on rye and choice of spinach salad or soup for $11.75. All together it was a nice sized plate of food and the thick cut potato chips were a nice touch-they had a great seasoning on them.

The salad was dressed with what tasted like a soy vinaigrette, the almonds were a great touch but the mushrooms were a bit of a disappointment, they seemed to be really water logged and tasted kinda blah, other than that the spinach was good and it was a decent salad compared to what other places offer up.

My sandwich was a solid pastrami sandwich, the meat as you can see was sliced pretty thin but it packed some big flavor and the mustard but that richness of the meat.  If I were to do one thing to make this sandwich better would to have thicker sliced meat.  The pickle on the side was a solid choice as well, it was crisp and tart with a nice dill hit.
Solly’s also offers up a ton of take home and frozen Jewish delicacies and at the end of the day the price might be a bit high but you do get what you pay for and supporting a local business is always a plus.

Bel Cafe at the Rosewood Hotel Georgia

Chef David Hawksworth has opened a new space in the Rosewood Hotel Georgia and this baby is named after his wife-the Bel Cafe is born!

The space is clean and modern yet has a comfort that a cafe needs, you just want to sit back and relax with a great cup of coffee or tea but that’s just the beginning of the great offerings.

Myself and @maryinvancity visited on day 3 of business and sampled a wide variety of items off the menu. They offer everything from breakfast, baked goods, sandwiches and soups and of course delicious desserts like homemade macaroons and fine french pastries.

I went with the Tuna Confit Sandwich for $10.50, It was a nice steak of tuna that was beautiful confit and was like an ultimate tuna sandwich, it was on nicely grilled bread and had house made celeriac remulode and crisp lettuce, the side salad of arugula and cornichon was a nice touch.

Mary went with the Butternut Squash sandwich with brie, arugula and apple compote on multigrain bread for $10.50. We split sandwiches so we could give an accurate review of each and we both loved this one, the squash and apple compote gave this a sweet tone but the brie and arugula brought the savory to the sandwich. I loved how the squash was sliced thick like a piece of meat! We’d both order this again in a heart beat.

After this great start we decided to tackle some of the deserts, they have a selection of in-house made macaroons and fine french pastry’s that caught our eyes so let the deliciousness begin!

We started with ALL of the flavors of macaroons!, staring at 12 o’clock and going clockwise we have chocolate, rosewater, vanilla bean, black sesame yuzu, pistachio and finally passion fruit. At $2 each these are now officially the cheapest macaroons in the city, there absolutely delicious and were tender yet slightly chewy. My favorite flavors were the vanilla bean, pistachio and the chocolate. The rosewater was light on flavor yet still tasted like perfume to me and the black sesame yuzu had an after taste that didn’t agree with my palate.

I ordered a white chocolate, coconut and calamansi mousse cake for $6.20. Calamansi is a tree fruit that looks like a lime and is indigenous to the Philippines and grows year round there-it’s the yellow jelly under the decoration, it tasted like perfectly ripe mandarin oranges that you would eat at Christmas time, it’s mainly used to flavor drinks and foods and isn’t generally eaten by its self. The cake was absolutely amazing, the outside was a light cake and that surrounded a mousse inside, the calamansi was on top and was best of you took some of everything in one bite. Both Mary and I loved this desert.

Mary had what I can only describe as a chocolate domed raspberry and chocolate mouse filled plate of awesomeness!, the chocolate on top was not hard but firm enough to hold everything together yet buckle under the weight of your fork

this was the inside so you can get a sense of what this bad boy is all about. It was gobbled up quickly by both of us and another table next to us had it as well and loved it. Again this was $6.20.

Mary also had a Dulce de leche latte and loved it, it’s Bel’s answer to the caramel Macchiato done with in-house made dulce de leche.

when we were talking about what deserts to try I was going to originally go for this but changed my mind to the white chocolate dessert, when our plates arrived the server brought this out as well and thought I should try it so the house compted me this as well as the macaroons. It was a classic baked vanilla bean cheesecake that was nice and dense like a New York cheesecake is, Mary and myself really enjoyed this a lot and a big thanks to Bel’s for letting us try this and the macaroons.

Bel’s is a fabulous place to stop in for a great lunch, coffee and desert and I don’t think you’ll be disappointed, it’s a great way to get a taste of whats coming out of the amazing Hawksworth kitchen, follow Bel’s on twitter at @Bel_cafe .

BG Urban Cafe Downtown Granville street location

Thing’s have changed over the years and it’s not for the best for BG or what I know them as-The Bread Garden.  I used to work for them in my early 20′s when they all were owned by The Spectra Restaurant group-the guys who owned Milestones,The Boat House, Chili’s and The Macaroni Grill.

The food was solid and the one thing you could count on was quality ingredients and the fact you got a good lunch or dinner for your money, in recent years they have become franchised out it’s looking like from the few different locations I’ve been to and some are better than others definitely.  What caught my eye was this:

it sounded like a great deal so I headed in and went up to order my soup and sandwich.  In the case they have all the sandwiches layed out and they all looked really good.

They have a few of the items on the menu still from when I worked there but I was going with something new that i haven’t had before.  I remember that the food for each store would come in during the middle of the night-basicly fresh from the big commissary kitchen they had in East Vancouver for sale the next day, now the kitchen is closed and I’m not so sure that things are brought in fresh everyday.

Mediterranean Chicken Sandwich half and Chicken Noodle Soup $6.99.  The whole sandwich was $7.99 and looked super fresh in the case but my half was LIMP like a wet noodle and was very sparse on toppings, when I went up to exchange my soup spoon for a clean one (the one I was given was coated in baked on crud) I noticed that all the sandwiches that were the variety I was having were all still in the case so the sandwiches for the deal they have are pre-made not in the case which leads me to question if they’re skimping on the toppings on these.  If I had this again at another BG cafe I’d have it not grilled-the lettuce goes slimy and gross.

This was the only choice of soup they had but hey-you gotta love chicken noodle soup right!  The broth was really thick in a bad way and also very salty, the noodles were mushy but the carrots were OK.  This is when I realized that I was eating something what was almost like a red can off the shelf with the slogan “mm good”

Mechanically separated chicken, I lost faith at this point and stopped eating my soup. Some might ask-what about the nice looking piece of bread on my plate with my meal, well,,,

it was the end of a loaf of bread to start with and second it was HARD AS A ROCK and obviously several days old.

This location of the BG Urban Cafe has lost touch with quality standards in my eyes and I’m generally pretty easy-going but I was completely disappointed with the quality of food and won’t be going back.

Thierry Patisserie

Vancouver for the longest time has not had a selection of fine places for dessert and chocolates with the exception of Thomas Haas on W.Broadway the selection has been slim pickings till now.

Vancouver pastry chef extraordinaire Thierry Busset, former pastry chef at Cin Cin and West and Internationally with friend and fellow chef Gordon Ramsey at London’s La Gravoché spent years developing the concept for his new chocolaterie/patisserie. Now open, it’s appropriately named Thierry, part of the Top Table family of restaurants. Thierry is the perfect place to sit down for a coffee or espresso (made with the exclusive Thierry Espresso Blend), beer, cold house-pressed juice, or a glass of wine. Sandwiches are available at lunchtime and dinner as well as out of this world gazpacho and quiche but you’ll probably be ready for something sweet like I was, making the decision of what to have is the hard part, every product was so deliciously presented and is a real feast for the eyes.

With Thierry in the kitchen himself with staff at 5am every morning helping make the daily greatness including the puff pastry used in his delicious pastries, croissants and making the fresh bread for sandwiches really shows his commitment to quality. One thing that should be noted~prices here are on the high end~$6.95 on average for most deserts, Thomas Haas on average is $5-$6 each so don’t get sticker shock when you come in for a bite.

Here are a selection of items I’ve had so far:

The Lemon Tart $6.95, the lemon tart here is divine, the filling is tart and rich and the pastry is flaky and not soggy from the filling, if you’re looking for a great lemon tart this would be a definite recommendation. The Americano’s here are really good and the espresso used is nice and full-bodied.

Chocolate Succe Cake $6.95, hazelnut meringue, chocolate mousse and 70% chocolate ganache. The description I just gave is what is on the card at the bakery, this actually to me wasn’t a cake, the meringue was like layers in a coffee crisp texture wise so you don’t get any cake in this one and the mouse is pretty dense inside, it was really hard to eat and my first bite was like this:

the thing practically went flying off the plate because the chocolate was fully hard, it was more like a big candy bar and could be eaten with your hands. I noticed a girl who got this thinking like me it would be cake and she ran into the same issues like I did and looked pretty disappointed. At the end if the day the flavors were great but if I had to do it over again I would have chosen something else.

I grabbed a few items to go for later and here’s the selection I got:

Exotic Fruit Tart $6.95, selection of papaya, lychee, kiwi, strawberries, goose berrys, pineapple and blackberry with pastry cream filling.

This was a nice light tart and the pastry cream in this is really nice and rich, the fruit is fresh and the pastry is buttery and crisp.

Tiramisu $6.95. This is one to check out, it’s nice and creamy yet really light, the chocolate panels on the side are a nice touch.  It has 2 layers of creamy mousse and a thin layer of cake on the bottom and in the middle to represent the lady fingers.

If you craving some great dessert check out Thierry on Alberni street in downtown Vancouver.

Original Cupcakes

The Original Cupcakes Bakery opened in the early 2001 before cupcakes were cool and trendy.  I can remember when the pink store opened on Denman street and it was a hit from day one.  Since then the 2 hometown BC girls and friends have franchised out the cupcakes stores and star in a docu-soap that follows entrepreneurs and best friends Heather White and Lori Joyce in their hectic and often hilarious journey to build a cupcake empire that airs in the W Network here in Canada.  Now I’m not gonna BS you~I loves me some cupcakes even tho I’m a dude, there one of the things that can put an instant smile on my face!.

The selection of available cupcakes is layed out before your eyes and how many your want is the real question~there all the same price each.

I usually go with 6 for $16 and get doubles of my favorite~red velvet

The Caramella~chocolate cupcake with caramel buttercream and filled with liquid caramel and also topped with a dollop of said caramel~it tastes like those square Kraft caramel’s that are in the bulk section~so good!

the Buttercup~peanut butter and chocolate marble cupcake with a peanut butter frosting, sometimes they are topped with little peanut butter cups but not on this visit, one thing that I really like about the cupcakes from here is the fact you can put tem in the fridge overnight and there fine the next day, all you have to do is let it sit at room temperature for a bit and its good to go and the cake is still super moist

the Sweet 16~vanilla cake with pink frosting and sprinkles, I normally don’t go for this one but it was chosen for a charity so $ from each one gets donated so I felt it offset the fact I was going to eat 6 cupcakes!.

the Red Velvet~its a chocolate cake with red food coloring, it can also be done naturally with coco powder, beets and buttermilk, I’m not sure what version there using here but its damn good and the cream cheese frosting on top is delish!.

Save On Meats Diner-Pig’s Can Fly!

Yes pigs can fly!, the Vancouver icon Save On Meats has been reborn and I must say that it manages to keep the best parts and more have been added~the booths are wired for laptops and there’s WiFi !.

Originally opened in 1957 it went strong for all of my life~things that stand out in my mind from childhood are Woodwards and Save On Meats and the big pig sign, the business finally closed it’s doors in 2009 when Al DesLauriers retired. I know I was now very happy to see it close, it was a go to place for summer BBQ eats and good deals on roasts for family dinners for me and my friends and a kick ass burger for pennies on the dollar, here’s a video I found that documents the last day of the old Save On Meats uploaded by Davely70. The new owner Mark Brand is the owner of the higher end restaurant Boneta in Gastown as well as Sea Monstr Sushi, The Diamond, Sharks + Hammers and the Catalog Gallery, this Vancouverite was eager to see something good happen to the building and not let it become another victim to the wrecking ball. After a year and a half full renovation and more than $1,000,000.00 pumped into the facility it’s a welcome and needed business in the Downtown Eastside.

There is a lot going on in the space now, part of the four-story building is leased to SOLE Food, an urban farm, run by local residents, who use it as a distribution center for produce. Brand is planning a commissary kitchen for neighborhood residents who might wish to start a food business. The complex also includes a bakery for the restaurant and baked goods are also sold next door in the butcher shop. It’s one of the few places where almost everything is made in~house, the bakery grind their own flour for baking, using wheat from various farms on Vancouver Island and this ends up in the homemade killer bread, baked goods and the brioche hamburger buns.

The ice cream for the triple thick shakes and soda fountain ice cream deserts is all made in-house and is DIVINE!. I’ve had the chocolate, banana and the coffee shakes here and have been a happy camper every time.

Having the butcher shop as part of the building helps keep the costs down on the restaurant side so you can have a filling home cooked meal and it won’t break the bank and also lets the neighborhood residents get benefit of being able to get quality affordable meat and baked goods on a limited budget. At the front where the windows used to separate the 2 entrances is now a take out sandwich and quick eats window where you can get an all day breakfast sandwich on homemade biscuit for $1.50

The menu speaks for itself:

they do the big 3 here~breakfast, lunch and dinner here, opening at 7am and closing at 10pm you have ample time to get over and get some good eats, the addition of a $4 kids menu with dishes that all come with your or your little one’s choice of salad, fries, coleslaw or fruit cup and milk or juice. makes it kid friendly and headache free for mom and dad.

Now on to the food I’ve had:

the Save On Meats burger with bacon and cheese with fries on the side $6, yes that price is right~six bucks!, its made from ground chuck and flank steak, it has house made bacon, cheese and all the usually suspects on a brioche bun, any other place this would be $10-$12 easy. I really liked it and it was the first thing I tried on my initial visit, the burger was flavorful and juicy, the bun was buttery and a bit sweet. It’s like the original Save On Meats burger got grown up and refined during the building makeover and still remained dirt cheap~a deal that you can’t miss in my books. One issue that I do have is the fact that the burger patty was a lot smaller than the bun and is something I’ve seen in other bloggers pictures, it’s not a deal breaker in my eyes~just a minor grumble and the pickle on top made up for it!.

the Clubhouse with fries and house made coleslaw $7

the roasted chicken in this bad boy was moist, tender and in my eyes needs to me a meal on its own!, it’s a classic done right in my eyes and is a solid choice of a sandwich. One thing that I didn’t mention above in talking about the burger were the fries~there crisp and tender inside like great fries should be and I’ve found myself craving them at 11pm at night a few times last week. When I order this again I’m going have to insist my sandwich be on more regular bread~I don’t know if I got the 2 ends from a loaf but the outsides were hard and difficult to eat around the edges, also on this visit my sandwich order was taken but got lost in translation in the kitchen and wasn’t made for 30 mins when I finally had enough and asked WTF, even the waitress couldn’t understand what happened back there in the kitchen, at the end of the day I had a free coffee triple thick shake for my trouble (as pictured above).

the open-faced roasted chicken sandwich with house made brown gravy with fries and coleslaw $8, I really liked this sandwich, the bread was super soft in the middle where the chicken was placed and the crust had some slight chew to it-if my clubhouse was on this It would have been a perfect sandwich, the roasted chicken was moist and tender. The house made brown gravy was not overly salty and added the right moisture to this classic knife and fork sandwich. The coleslaw they make here is vinegar biased I think, all I know it’s not the gloopy mayo kind and I really love it!. One thing that I will say is that this menu item needs to have another piece of bread with chicken and gravy on it to be a open-faced chicken sandwich and to fill you up, I was still hungry and could have easily downed a burger or a couple of pieces of pie from Acme Cafe 2 doors down from Save On Meats.

The Damn Fine Ruben $7, this was ordered by a lady sitting next to me, she asked the waitress to surprise her with a sandwich that is killer and this magnificent treat was brought to her, the sandwich lived up to expectations of something great and I think I’ll have to have one of these next time I’m in.

The Meatloaf plate with Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes and fresh peas & carrots $9, classic meatloaf with gravy minus the tomato soup top like mom used to make. This plate comes with your choice of fries or buttermilk mashed potatoes and fresh carrots & peas, the mashed potatoes are killer here and are not to me missed. I really enjoyed most of my meatloaf, it has a nice rich beef flavor and the gravy is great without being salty, the one issue I ran into was 3/4 of the way through someone next to me pointed that some of my meatloaf looked pretty pink and boy was she right!, the waitress took my plate back to the kitchen and returned a few minutes later, I was informed that one of the owners looked at it and wasn’t comfortable serving it, she offered me something else off the menu so I chose a sandwich, when she returned from putting in my new order she told me that they use nitrate in the meatloaf~or as she said “salt peter”, I was relieved that I didn’t eat undercooked meat but then I was kinda pissed at the fact I was fed nitrates when I wasn’t expecting them to be in this dish.

the Corned Beef Sandwich on Caraway Rye $7, after my meatloaf incident this is what I ordered, it solidified the fact I have to try the Damn Fine Ruben because the corned beef here is really good!, the mustard cut the richness of the meat just fine and the bread used is really good, it had caraway seeds and they add a great flavor to this and the ruben.

Sitting near the cakes and pies is a dangerous thing, I watched as this beauty was brought out by the pastry chef

the Save On Meats version of a Black forest Cake $6, I didn’t have any of this but it looked damn good and the chocolate glaze on top added to its decadence. One thing I did have a piece of but didn’t get a photo was one of their chocolate chip, macadamia nut and BACON cookies!, the lady next to me ordered some to go, they weren’t my thing~too crisp and crunchy and I didn’t get any bacon flavor.

I’d say that once all the opening kinks get worked out Save On Meats will enjoy another long life in its original home and will be feeding a whole new generation to come. Mark Brand you have done a great thing for the community and me and a lot of other Vancouverites thank you!.
