An Afternoon Of Eating and Drinking Notturno Paninoteca’s New Menu

Some big things have changed since my first post about Notturno~they’ve got their liquor license now and have fully opened for lunch and dinner service with a selection of great wines, beers and a bigger menu full of delish creations from Chef Adrian.

I was invited by the owner to come by and try some of these new treats and I ended up finding one of my new favorite beers so it was a winning day of great food, awesome restaurant talk and delish beer and Italian soda’s that would make your Nonna smile!

The menu has been expanded to include salumi plates, salads, brushette and of course their great panini’s.

A wine and beer menu has also been added, it’s posted on the wall and changes periodically~the guy’s at Notturno aren’t trying to carry every choice out there booze wise and are concentrating on great drinkable wines that also wont break the bank.

This is one of my new favorite beers, it’s from Spain and would never had been on my radar, the Estrella Damm INEDIT, it’s a unique coupage of barley malt and wheat, flavored with coriander, orange peel and liquorice.  It really did compliment the dishes I had and was a pleasure to drink~I see many more bottles of this in my future.

Inedit is the first beer specifically created to accompany food. It is born from the conviction that a beer that could be paired with the utmost respect to the best cuisine was necessary. That is its aim and its virtue, and that is what makes Inedit different, special and unique.”

It’s the only beer that I’ve heard of that suggests keeping the open bottle in an ice bucket between glass refills and also it’s best served in a wine glass, it’s on the menu here for $16 but we got 4 generous servings out of one bottle.

They also have brought in a line of premium Italian soda’s from Abbodino, there are 2 variety’s that they carry, I tried the orange flavor and it was just like drinking a carbonated orange, totally refreshing and a nice change from the San Pellegrino brand that I usually have.

This is the selection of bruschette that I had

The Crudo~fresh Albacore tuna crudo, chili aioli, cucumber and balsamic pearls.  It was like a tuna salad that mom couldn’t make!, the spice wasn’t too strong from the chili aioli and the balsamic pearls bursting in your mouth were a great touch.

The Fico~Blue cheese aioli, black olive, walnut and fresh greens.  The same ingredients that they have in the Fico panini but just in a smaller bite sized form, the blue cheese aioli and the walnuts compliment each other beautifully and the black olive added that nice salty hit.

The Tartufo Di Capra~Black truffle goat cheese, fresh greens and topped with tomato pearls.  This was one of my favorites, the predominate flavor is yummy black truffles and the goat cheese is nice and creamy~the perfect touch to the truffle and the tomato pearls add that fresh acidic touch to break up the big flavors.

The Anatra~Duck prosciutto, goat cheese and arugula.  The star of this bad boy was the duck prosciutto, it’s a nice meaty bite and was a pleasure to eat, I’ve had duck prosciutto before at a fine dining restaurant and really loved it.  If you’re not a duck fan but like prosciutto try this~it’s nice and meaty but not in a gamey way.

Since I have a love of beets I had to try their Radice Insalata, it had beets, seasonal vegetables, taleggio cheese and a walnut vinaigrette.  This was another hit and if you like beet salads this is for you!, the seasonal veg in this case was root vegetables like carrots and also yellow beets, green beans and the walnuts are ground up and put in the dressing so you get that nutty flavor in every bite.

To round things out i went with the ever so popular Calabrese Panini, it has spicy capicollo, spicy sopressata, salami, spicy pickled eggplant, provolone and goat cheese.  For $9.50 its a great value seeing all the top quality salumi, the meats weren’t too spicy tho and the goat cheese really rounded out the big flavors.

From what I got to sample I think the larger menu is going to be a hit and is already proving to be pretty popular.  Notturno is participating in the Vancouver Foodster Tasting Plates event coming up on Feb 15, 2012 along with a bunch of other great restaurants, they will be featuring the Crudo, Tartufo Di Capra and Fico brushette as their offering for the event, if you want to buy tickets to the event and see a complete line up of participating restaurants and menus please click here.

**Note of disclosure~all my food samples were provided free by Notturno and also my drinks were covered also, I was invited to try some items and wasn’t expected to write a post~I’m doing it because everything kicked butt and I wanted to spread the good food news.**

Leonidas Fresh Belgian Chocolates

Leonidas is a new name to me and I’m really happy that @MaryInVancity turned me on to this fine Belgian confectionery store!, we were out walking after a great lunch and we were looking for some dessert, she used the Groupon app to see if there were any deals in the area and saw that they had an instant Groupon available~$5 for a hand crafted hot chocolate and a leiage waffle, seeing it was the first day of the hot chocolate festival we figured that is was worth checking out.  You can read Mary’s post here.

With a history going back to 1910 there certainly is something to be said about a name that can stick around that long doing what they do best, here is a bit of info about them from their website:

“At the dawn of the 21st century, Leonidas chocolates are on sale in 40 different countries in the world through a network of some 1,400 sales outlets. And the adventure continues … Today, the name Leonidas has come to stand for the quintessential Belgian chocolate. To the Belgians certainly, but also to chocolate gourmets and gourmands all over the world, who are enjoying the Belgian Leonidas chocolates across the five continents. Leonidas chocolates are on sale in 1,400 sales outlets, from Paris to Rome, from Sydney to Tokyo, from New York to Vancouver… Indeed, Leonidas chocolates are being sold everywhere; which ever country you travel to, whichever city you find yourself in, you will find a shop carrying the Leonidas emblem. Leonidas chocolates have featured in articles in some of the world’s leading daily newspapers and lifestyle magazines. Leonidas wins hands down! In response to the question “What is your favorite chocolate?”, most consumers said: Leonidas, the undisputed fresh Belgian chocolate. This was the outcome of the well-publicized “National Brands competition 2004″ organized by the LDV advertising agency, and its partners. The basis for the competition was very simple: a list of the leading brands in each sector, from cars to washing powder was drawn up. A panel of consumers (25,252 as it happens) were then asked to express their likes and dislikes, choosing their preferred brand in each category. In the “Chocolates” category, there was only one winner: Leonidas chocolates.51.7% of consumers consider Leonidas to be and remain the most popular chocolate in Belgium. The National Brands Competition is organized every year, over the Internet, attracting an ever younger section of consumers, who clearly love Leonidas chocolates, just as much their parents do. For the first competition, held in 2003, Leonidas won the “Chocolates” category in the National Brands Competition hands down.”

The location in Vancouver is the only one in Canada so it’s a must visit if you’re visiting the city from another part of the Country or World for that matter!

The space is bright and on the side of the Trade and Convention Center, the scenic shot above is from just outside of the shop.  They have a selection of hand-made chocolates that are flown in from Belgium on a weekly basis, they are sold in a weight basis for everything and look totally delish~they had another Groupon for a custom chocolate tasting and an espresso but like I said~we came for the hot chocolate!

Mary went with the Milk Chocolate Hot Chocolate, all there drinks are made with whole chocolate and not syrups or powder mixes so you’re getting a great product.  Mary loved this and was a happy camper.

I went with a blend of chocolate~a mix of milk and dark chocolate for my drink, it was absolutely delicious and I would totally order it again.  The blend of chocolate made for a rich and not overly sweet hot chocolate and I didn’t miss the fact there wasn’t any whipped cream~it was rich enough.

The leiage waffles here are from a Belgian bakery on W.2nd Ave, they are totally authentic and contain sugar crystals that make for great flavor and a bit of crunch when eating the waffle but also make for a great golden caramelized color and flavor in the waffle that makes it a step up from another place in the city that is famous for their waffles.  Also when you order your waffle it’s heated for you in a toaster oven so it’s piping hot and SO GOOD!

Dessert at Cento Notti

After a great meal at the Hurricane Grill in Yaletown – @MaryInVacity and myself destroyed the Hurricane Fiesta package from VANEATS.ca, some walking was in order and I suggested that we hit Cento Notti in the Opus Hotel because some great dessert was on my mind!

I’ve had the pleasure of dining here for lunch and sampled a few dishes and the dessert really stood out for me so I knew this would be the right place to come.
Mary went with the Pumpkin bread Pudding with house made Pistachio Gelato and Biscotti $8, it was also served with a Crème anglaise and had cranberry’s with the bread pudding.  She was kind enough to let me sample it and it was totally delicious, the gelato was smooth and rich yet not too heavy and the sauce balanced out the earth spices of the pumpkin bread pudding.
I went with the Frozen Tiramisu $8, I’ve heard great things about this and they sure were right~it’s amazing, being frozen it’s a totally different mouth experience when eating this, the tiramisu was topped with a thick rich mascarpone mousse that I especially liked and the edible gold leaf was a beautiful finishing touch.
If you’re looking for a great dessert and a solid Italian meal check out Cento Notti, they have a terrific $35 three course price fixe menu that includes the dessert I had as a choice.

Footo Delights

A new bakery has opened in downtown Vancouver and it specializes in handmade croissants, Footo Delights (Fresh Out Of The Oven) is owned and operated by Brenda Yip, a graduate from the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts in Vancouver and SFU Alumni, she has a huge passion for what she does, she puts her heart and soul into the products she creates and it really shows in the final product.

Footo Delight’s  is located on Homer St right near Robson St neat the Vancouver Public Library so it’s super easy to get to and there open early if you’re in the mood to have fresh-baked croissants in the morning.

On a recent stay close by at a local hotel for the Grey Cup I stopped by Footo Delight’s for a bite to eat and to pick up some croissants for breakfast in the morning before the big game.

The croissants I picked up to take back to the hotel were the following:

The classic Cheese Croissant, delicious and flakey, buttery and cheesy!, this was a great croissant and the cheese flavor really came through.

The Spinach and Feta croissant is always a favorite of mine and this one was one of the biggest I have ever had!, it was filled with nice big chunks of salty feta and cooked spinach, again no complaints here.

For a sweet treat I grabbed an Almond Croissant, this one was coated with an apricot glaze that made it a sticky mess to eat but the flavors were great and it would be better enjoyed fresh out of the oven.

For the 3 filled croissants I paid just about $10, it might seem like a much but it’s a hand-made from scratch product with only the finest, freshest ingredients and I think there worth every penny.

The items I had when I was in the bakery were the following:

They offer a selection of croissant sandwiches, I’ve heard great things from @foodologyca about the Turkey Pesto sandwich so I went with that.  For $5.95 it’s a great value and is equally delicious, I had them warm mine in the oven so the croissant was extra flakey and the cheese and tomato were nicely warmed and melted.  The pesto was definitely their flavor wise~it’s straight up pesto and not mixed with mayo like most other places do but all the ingredients worked well together.

Lastly to wrap up a good meal I had one of Brenda’s delsih handmade desserts, I went with the tiramisu, It has whipped mascarpone cheese with lady fingers dipped in a rum/espresso blend and dusted with cacao powder.  This was one damn fine tiramisu!, the mascarpone cheese was super rich and creamy yet really light, the lady fingers were nicely soaked and not complete mush so there was nice texture there.

If you find yourself in the area around the Vancouver Public Library be sure to check out this wonderful small business and show your support.  Right now Footo Delight’s is running a contest via there Twitter account~think of your ideal croissant flavor and submit your idea, if it’s chosen you get a dozen of your flavor to enjoy!, check out there Twitter account here .

Bel Cafe at the Rosewood Hotel Georgia

Chef David Hawksworth has opened a new space in the Rosewood Hotel Georgia and this baby is named after his wife-the Bel Cafe is born!

The space is clean and modern yet has a comfort that a cafe needs, you just want to sit back and relax with a great cup of coffee or tea but that’s just the beginning of the great offerings.

Myself and @maryinvancity visited on day 3 of business and sampled a wide variety of items off the menu. They offer everything from breakfast, baked goods, sandwiches and soups and of course delicious desserts like homemade macaroons and fine french pastries.

I went with the Tuna Confit Sandwich for $10.50, It was a nice steak of tuna that was beautiful confit and was like an ultimate tuna sandwich, it was on nicely grilled bread and had house made celeriac remulode and crisp lettuce, the side salad of arugula and cornichon was a nice touch.

Mary went with the Butternut Squash sandwich with brie, arugula and apple compote on multigrain bread for $10.50. We split sandwiches so we could give an accurate review of each and we both loved this one, the squash and apple compote gave this a sweet tone but the brie and arugula brought the savory to the sandwich. I loved how the squash was sliced thick like a piece of meat! We’d both order this again in a heart beat.

After this great start we decided to tackle some of the deserts, they have a selection of in-house made macaroons and fine french pastry’s that caught our eyes so let the deliciousness begin!

We started with ALL of the flavors of macaroons!, staring at 12 o’clock and going clockwise we have chocolate, rosewater, vanilla bean, black sesame yuzu, pistachio and finally passion fruit. At $2 each these are now officially the cheapest macaroons in the city, there absolutely delicious and were tender yet slightly chewy. My favorite flavors were the vanilla bean, pistachio and the chocolate. The rosewater was light on flavor yet still tasted like perfume to me and the black sesame yuzu had an after taste that didn’t agree with my palate.

I ordered a white chocolate, coconut and calamansi mousse cake for $6.20. Calamansi is a tree fruit that looks like a lime and is indigenous to the Philippines and grows year round there-it’s the yellow jelly under the decoration, it tasted like perfectly ripe mandarin oranges that you would eat at Christmas time, it’s mainly used to flavor drinks and foods and isn’t generally eaten by its self. The cake was absolutely amazing, the outside was a light cake and that surrounded a mousse inside, the calamansi was on top and was best of you took some of everything in one bite. Both Mary and I loved this desert.

Mary had what I can only describe as a chocolate domed raspberry and chocolate mouse filled plate of awesomeness!, the chocolate on top was not hard but firm enough to hold everything together yet buckle under the weight of your fork

this was the inside so you can get a sense of what this bad boy is all about. It was gobbled up quickly by both of us and another table next to us had it as well and loved it. Again this was $6.20.

Mary also had a Dulce de leche latte and loved it, it’s Bel’s answer to the caramel Macchiato done with in-house made dulce de leche.

when we were talking about what deserts to try I was going to originally go for this but changed my mind to the white chocolate dessert, when our plates arrived the server brought this out as well and thought I should try it so the house compted me this as well as the macaroons. It was a classic baked vanilla bean cheesecake that was nice and dense like a New York cheesecake is, Mary and myself really enjoyed this a lot and a big thanks to Bel’s for letting us try this and the macaroons.

Bel’s is a fabulous place to stop in for a great lunch, coffee and desert and I don’t think you’ll be disappointed, it’s a great way to get a taste of whats coming out of the amazing Hawksworth kitchen, follow Bel’s on twitter at @Bel_cafe .

Back To Thierry-This Time With Mary

I hit up Thierry again this week for some deserts and this time I took Maryinvancity along with me to try some treats after a Canuck’s preseason home game~what better way to drowned one’s sorrows than with fine deserts!.

When we got there around 9:30 the place was packed but we were lucky and scored a table on the patio, we grabbed a selection of deserts so on to the food!

Chocolate Opera Cake $6.95, a layer of chocolate ganache and chocolate butter cream with coffee type liquor and topped off with a  think hard layer of chocolate, for being so small this bad boy packs a punch and is quite rich, I really enjoyed it but Mary found it a bit to rich.

Blueberry Tart $6.55, like the exotic fruit tart I’ve had before but with just blueberry’s and vanilla pastry cream, I like the fruit tarts here and Mary also really enjoyed it, we both commented on how rich the pastry cream is without being heavy.  This dish is a total winner.

Chocolate Trio $6.95, layers of white chocolate mousse, milk chocolate mousse and dark chocolate mouse with 2 thin layers of chocolate cake, the mousse’s are really rich and creamy yet are light and airy so it’s actually pretty easy to eat one of these yourself.

Assorted Macaroons $11.95 for 7, by the time we got here a lot of the popular flavors were sold out, in this selection we got a couple of chocolate with hazelnut butter cream, a lemon, a key lime, a cappuccino and a chocolate with pistachio butter cream.  A couple of the bigger macaroons were kind of hard to eat but most were soft and tender and the butter cream fillings were really nice, some of the  macaroons have a little surprise in the form of a jam or real fruit drop in the butter cream middle~really nice.

Thierry Patisserie on Urbanspoon

Thierry Patisserie

Vancouver for the longest time has not had a selection of fine places for dessert and chocolates with the exception of Thomas Haas on W.Broadway the selection has been slim pickings till now.

Vancouver pastry chef extraordinaire Thierry Busset, former pastry chef at Cin Cin and West and Internationally with friend and fellow chef Gordon Ramsey at London’s La Gravoché spent years developing the concept for his new chocolaterie/patisserie. Now open, it’s appropriately named Thierry, part of the Top Table family of restaurants. Thierry is the perfect place to sit down for a coffee or espresso (made with the exclusive Thierry Espresso Blend), beer, cold house-pressed juice, or a glass of wine. Sandwiches are available at lunchtime and dinner as well as out of this world gazpacho and quiche but you’ll probably be ready for something sweet like I was, making the decision of what to have is the hard part, every product was so deliciously presented and is a real feast for the eyes.

With Thierry in the kitchen himself with staff at 5am every morning helping make the daily greatness including the puff pastry used in his delicious pastries, croissants and making the fresh bread for sandwiches really shows his commitment to quality. One thing that should be noted~prices here are on the high end~$6.95 on average for most deserts, Thomas Haas on average is $5-$6 each so don’t get sticker shock when you come in for a bite.

Here are a selection of items I’ve had so far:

The Lemon Tart $6.95, the lemon tart here is divine, the filling is tart and rich and the pastry is flaky and not soggy from the filling, if you’re looking for a great lemon tart this would be a definite recommendation. The Americano’s here are really good and the espresso used is nice and full-bodied.

Chocolate Succe Cake $6.95, hazelnut meringue, chocolate mousse and 70% chocolate ganache. The description I just gave is what is on the card at the bakery, this actually to me wasn’t a cake, the meringue was like layers in a coffee crisp texture wise so you don’t get any cake in this one and the mouse is pretty dense inside, it was really hard to eat and my first bite was like this:

the thing practically went flying off the plate because the chocolate was fully hard, it was more like a big candy bar and could be eaten with your hands. I noticed a girl who got this thinking like me it would be cake and she ran into the same issues like I did and looked pretty disappointed. At the end if the day the flavors were great but if I had to do it over again I would have chosen something else.

I grabbed a few items to go for later and here’s the selection I got:

Exotic Fruit Tart $6.95, selection of papaya, lychee, kiwi, strawberries, goose berrys, pineapple and blackberry with pastry cream filling.

This was a nice light tart and the pastry cream in this is really nice and rich, the fruit is fresh and the pastry is buttery and crisp.

Tiramisu $6.95. This is one to check out, it’s nice and creamy yet really light, the chocolate panels on the side are a nice touch.  It has 2 layers of creamy mousse and a thin layer of cake on the bottom and in the middle to represent the lady fingers.

If you craving some great dessert check out Thierry on Alberni street in downtown Vancouver.

Finch’s Tea and Coffee House

Located at Homer and Pender St is the Vancouver landmark Finch’s Tea and Coffee House.  It’s been there for as long as I can remember and busy all the time and I can see what and am kicking myself in the ass for not finding this place sooner.

It’s a mix of shabby worn tables and chairs and antique glass that adds the old world vibe to this place and the mixed crowd of young and old enjoying their sandwiches, tea and coffee

With a selection of sandwiches, salads and drinks there is something for everyone I would think

menu image taken from there website

lots to choose from

One of my favorite sandwiches here is one of the most popular~the pear, prosciutto, blue brie and toasted walnuts $8.75

It has to be one of the best combination of ingredients I’ve ever had in a sandwich and is also offered in a salad form~YUMMO!

This is one of those sandwiches where you are ment to get a bite of everything in each much~all the ingredients work together to give you a balanced bite enjoyable bite, the balsamic vinegar cuts the richness of the meat and cheese and the pear adds a great sweet crispness to the sandwich and all the big ingredients.

The Gipsy Salami baguette $7.50, the other type of meat offered here is salami, this peppered beauty is on the same bread, served with lettuce and fresh tomatoes that are salt and peppered then packed with gipsy salami and pesto mayo is the food lube for the baby.

When I said the sandwich was packed with salami I wasn’t joking!, the meat was folded into triangles which ultimately lead to the meat exploding out after I took my 1st bite so I ended up eating some meat by itself and filling what I had left back into the bread so this one was more pretty looking and tasted great but was a hot mess to eat.

If you’re in the area Finch’s is a great place to check out for a great lunch or brunch on the weekends and all sandwiches can be made to go.

La Brasserie~One of the Davie Street Gems

La Brasserie has been a favorite of mine since they opened 3 years ago in the heart of the Davie Village. Since opening the doors they have been a success, serving Franco~German or dishes from the Alsatian region of Europe (German/French border). This region is not known for there light cuisine, it’s a mountainous region so meat and potato’s type cooking is the call of the day.

The inside is warm and inviting with dark wood chairs and tables, candlelight bathes the room as the sun goes down and french music plays softly in the background, I can testify to the romantic dinners and atmosphere here in this tight space and a weekend evening dinner can’t be beat.

I felt like something different tonight and knowing I wouldn’t be disappointed I headed for La Brasserie

A smile is there as you walk in to greet you~a great start to any meal, after being seated at my table and me attentive waitress took my drink order quickly, I decided to go with a Konig Ludwig~a German wheat beer

this type of beer is served in a pretty big glass~people were looking walking by as I took drinks but it’s also available in a bigger double size if you’re in the mood!. I really like this type of wheat beer because its light and refreshing and goes with a lot of the items on the menu I knew I would be chowing down on.

Complementary carraway pumpernickel and fresh baguette with homemade pork and chicken rillettes & fresh butter arrived at the table, I really enjoy this and is a great bonus appy, their rillettes are smooth and tender and just the right amount of flavor. This is replenished thru the meal if your dining for a while and if you have more than one person at the table

For my appy I chose my favorite menu item from day one~Alsian Onion tart~a caramelized onion tart with bacon lardon’s and a dollop of creme fraiche that is rich and yummy and delicious salad to cut the richness of the tart

I could eat 2 orders of this without thinking!

For my main I chose the suckling pig with house-made sauerkraut and schupfrudel~something that was described as kind of like a German’s take on gnocchi made with some nutmeg and the plate was served with a side of German mustard

I really enjoyed this and the sauerkraut was really nice and had a sweet quality to it, the suckling pig was tender and moist in the middle and around the outside was a beautiful layer of crackling~YUMMY!!. The mustard was a great side to have and the perfect bite for me was pork, kraut and a dab of mustard~serious NOMS, the schupfrudel was a miss for me, it was doughy and not to my liking and the nutmeg flavor wasn’t there~I think it would have been better with spatzle to soak up all that yummy sauce that was all over the pork.

With a killer a street cart and a kick ass restaurant the guy’s at La Brasserie are doin’ it right all the way around, I’ve recommended the restaurant to friends looking for a special night out and am glad it’s in the neighborhood serving up the food that I love.  La brasserie can be found on Zagat here .
