Lunch At The Acme Cafe

The Acme Cafe is a favorite of mine when I’m looking for a new take on diner classics so on this visit I tried their take on the chicken club sandwich.

I started with one of their solid milkshakes, in this case I chose the espresso milkshake for $5.25 and I must say the make a great one that has a couple fresh shots in every shake.

This is the star of the show, the Acme’s $12 take on the chicken club contains the following ingredients: multi-grain or white bread, chicken, bacon, aged cheddar, tomato, arugula, sun-dried tomato mayo and grainy mustard. The sun-dried tomato mayo and grainy mustard add a totally unique taste and flavor to the sandwich and the fresh roasted chicken is moist and tender. Sandwiches here come with broccoli almond slaw and potato chips-I went with all slaw and I must say they have really good dill pickle spears here.

One thing that’s not to be missed here is the dessert case by the front door.  It’s stocked fresh daily with homemade cakes, pies, cookies and other yummy pastry’s by Peggy and the amazing pasty chef they have in-house.

Cafe Medina Brunch

Located on the border of the downtown east side and the downtown core sits a small oasis named Cafe Medina. It’s one of the more popular places for brunch on the weekend and its small size makes for some long waits~in is case an hour and a half so Maryinvancity put our names down and we went off to check out the That Barista Thing put on by Blenz at the Vancouver Public Library.

With our return to the restaurant there was still a good line up outside but the staff come out constantly checking for people who just might have arrived and taking names and seating people so we didn’t have to wait to long~15 minutes or so.

The room is long and narrow and the tables are packed tightly, it does add to the atmosphere, there is also bar seating behind where we were. There known for really good waffles with gourmet dips~lavender and white chocolate is one of the more popular and also they make really nice latte’s here.

I had a med size regular cafe latte $4 and change, really nice and the sugar wasn’t needed.

Mary had a lavender latte $3.60, really nice latte art I must say and she really enjoyed this, they also do a couple other flavors.

Waffle $3.15 each with Fig Marmalade Dip $1

Waffle $3.15 with Dark Chocolate dip $1, Mary had the fig marmalade dip and I had the dark chocolate, I really enjoyed mine and tried Marys dip~I liked mine more but Mary enjoyed both. I found the chocolate to be nice and rich and it was nice and runny so it took to the waffle really well when dipping.

Omelette $12, the filling varies everyday, today it was vegetarian with roasted potatoes, cherry tomatoes and chanterelle’s and cheese. Each plate was served with bread, the screaming hot cast iron skillet is a great touch to serve food in, my eggs were light and fluffy and the roasted potatoes were a great touch, the mushrooms were lightly sautéed in butter and capped the dish off perfectly!.

Cassoulet $15, Mary went with the Cassoulet with the sunny side up eggs, it’s served with baked beans, french farmers sausage, double smoked bacon and andouille, the bread here was perfect for this:

That prefect runny yolk, the perfectly cooked egg, that was the case here and I must say that this dish isn’t to be missed, it was enjoyed hands down!.

At the end of the day Cafe Medina is worth the wait and the different dishes available will keep most people happy without a doubt.  A full review can be found on the Zagat.com site.

Nimby Burger

Over across from Kits beach in the little corner of a sports bar is a little gem called Nimby Burger!

It’s strictly take out so the location to the beach is ideal so summer time chow downs will be taking place that’s for sure.  The menu is real simple~little burgers with cheese if you please, shakes and hand cut fries and everything nice!

you can order a dooblay which is essentially a double cheese burger with lettuce, pickles, onions and  tomatoes~the pickles here are off the hook by the way~tart and crisp and nothing like I’ve had at other places.

hand cut fry’s are the plan of the day here and are fried to order, I haven’t had any yet but I see they use Kennebec potatoes

They have an open kitchen so everything is on display, I didn’t have to wait long for my burgers and every order is done fresh like the fries so I was in and out in under 10 minutes

now burgers and drink in hand I headed for one of the reasons why I live In Vancouver

even on an over cast day it can’t be beat for lunch!, I grabbed a seat and opened my bag of goodness:

BAM!

hot, fresh and ready to be devoured with a million dollar view in front of me all I couldn’t careless, I was transfixed with this

the toasted bun was soft and held together, the meat was not dry considering they have thin patty’s and the toppings worked like they should and like I said before~the pickles are kick ass!

Nimby is a great little spot across from the beach that should get your $ over the concession stands at Kits beach~the quality can’t be beat and you’ll have a smile on your face that’s for sure, the service is friendly and you can check out there burger line webcam to see what the line up is like before you head over.
