Oh My Sala Thai

The newest dinning package from VANEATS.ca is Oh My Sala Thai.  The great VANEATS.ca crew have teamed up with Sala Thai and are bringing you a taste of Thailand with this package and for $18 it’s a great way to get a taste of the menu if your new to Thai food it’s a nice introduction to a wonderful country’s cuisine.

The menu they have put together is as follows:

  1. Som Tom, shredded green papaya, tomatoes, green beans, ground peanuts, fresh chilies & lime juice
  2. Gai Hor Bai Toey, tender pieces of chicken marinated in a chef sauce wrapped and cooked in pandanus leaves
  3. Thai Crispy Squid, lightly battered and tossed with mixed Thai herbs and spices
  4. Royal Pad Thai Chao Wang, our most popular Thai rice noodle dish with shrimp, egg, tofu, bean sprouts & ground peanut
  5. Gaeng Keaw Whan, sliced chicken, simmered in coconut milk, Thai green curry with bamboo shoots, eggplant, bell peppers & sweet basil leaves
  6. Klauy Tod, deep fried banana served with home made coconut ice cream

When you walk in off the hustle and bustle of Burrard Street your surrounded by warmth from all the rich wood. The rest of the interior is traditionally decorated with authentic Thai pieces that have been brought over from Thailand.

Being one of the featured reviewers I was lucky enough to eat this package twice in a week.  On my 1st visit I brought @MaryInVancity with me and on my 2nd visit I was with another featured reviewer-Eyes Bigger Than My Stomach.  We started with a couple of non-alcoholic drinks-the Mango Slushi ($6.50) and the Miss Thailand ($12.50).  My slushi was blended well but I really liked Mary’s drink more, it was rich and creamy without being heavy and the pieces of fresh coconut meat were nice and refreshing.

On my second dinner here I wanted to try some of the chicken satay, it’s priced at $8.95 for 4 satay’s and is served with a nice peanut sauce and a tangy Thai vinaigrette.  The chicken was nicely marinated with great flavor.  The one thing that would have made these outstanding is if the chicken portion was larger.

The first item up in the Oh My Sala Thai dining package is a trio of appys, calamari, green papaya salad and a delish marinated chicken cooked in pandanus leaves.

First we have Som Tom-shredded green papaya, tomatoes, green beans, ground peanuts, fresh chilies & lime juice.  The papaya salad was spicy but not blow your head off hot, we found a lot of the spice is in the dressing and as we got to the bottom of the salad it got hotter.  The papaya was crunchy and refreshing especially when mixed with the peanuts.

Calamari isn’t something I associate with dinners at a Thai restaurant.  This calamari was lightly breaded and was nice and tender but I would have loved to see another choice of a traditional Thai dish for a appy choice.

This was my favorite item in the dining package.  Gai Hor Bai Toey is something that I have never had before.  The chicken was tender and flavorful yet had a sweet taste to it.  It wasn’t spicy at all so it’s something that would appeal to a lot of diners.  I’d totally order this again from the menu.

This package has 2 entrée’s included in it.  First up we have a traditional Thai coconut milk green curry or as it’s traditionally called-Gaeng Keaw Whan.  It is a mix of sliced chicken, simmered in coconut milk, Thai green curry with bamboo shoots, eggplant, bell peppers & sweet basil leaves and served with a side of jasmine rice and a bundle of rice flour noodles.  I preferred the rice over the noodles-they were nicely flavored but were too sticky for my taste.  The curry was flavorful and not overly spiced from a heat perspective, one thing that I noticed on both visits was the need for a bit more coconut milk-the curry was on the thin side.  The other ingredients were on point, the chicken was tender and flavor full and the other veggies were good.

The other entrée you get is Pan Thai or Royal Pad Thai Chao Wang.  A classic that contains rice noodles, prawns, egg, tofu, bean sprouts and peanuts in a savory sauce.  This was a good pad Thai from the aspect of the sauce-I’ve had it places where the sauce reminds me of something made with sweet ketchup but this one is made the traditional way with tamarind.  One thing that we would have liked to have with both of our entrée’s is to be asked how spicy we wanted our dishes-not done by staff on both of my visits so if you like things to be spiced up please don’t hesitate to ask them to jack it up!

Lastly is dessert, Klauy Tod-a delish deep-fried banana with homemade coconut ice cream.  This was a winner on both of my visits.  The ice cream is dairy free so it can be enjoyed by all and the banana was crispy on the outside and warm and creamy on the inside.  The toasted coconut sprinkled on top added a nice flavor contrast to the ice cream.

Apart from the minor issues I had with the food and not being asked about spice level this dining package is worth the $18 for the 2 mains alone.  Oh My Sala Thai goes on sale starting on April 18,2012 at 7AM, to get yours please click here.

**Disclosure-as a featured reviewer I didn’t pay for my dining package but did pay for all drinks and extra items ordered in my post.  All opinions are completely my own and not influenced by VANEATS.ca**

Quick Noms-Bali Thai Southeast Asian Grill

In my search for solid, cheap eats I was really pleased to read Foodology.ca’s post about Bali Thai in the Harbor Center Mall food court, you can check it out by clicking here.

There known for outstanding, friendly service here and great food to match-something that I haven’t found a lot of in food court cuisine.  I’ve made a couple visits there this week and tried a couple 2 item combos so let’s get on to the good shall we!

This is a plate that I had on my 2nd visit, it’s Indonesian Fried rice as a base and my 2 items were a Indonesian Lamb Curry and a stewed eggplant dish, the wonderful owner also insisted that I take a vegetable fritter with some of their outstanding peanut sauce because as she put it-”you look like a hungry boy!”-lady you have no idea!.  I had the lamb curry on my 1st visit and there’s a picture of it below and description below, it was so good I had it again on this visit .

The vegetable fritter with the peanut sauce was something that I could eat a ton of-it really was that star of the plate, it had a good mix of veggies in it and that peanut sauce was smooth and flavorful and should not be missed.

The eggplant for me was not a winning dish, I found it sour tasting and the spices really did overpower and the fish sauce flavor was a but too much for me.  The rice option that I chose was OK but the other type I tried on my 1st visit was my favorite hands down.

This is the Indonesian Lamb Curry, it was creamy, fragrant and delish, the meat was super tender and pretty much melted in my mouth, the sauce was not spicy at all and had coconut milk in it I believe and potatoes made u the rest of the dish.  For the rice choice I went with a saffron and coconut rice that was fragrant and delicious.

For my other item I chose a beef curry from Indonesia I believe, it consisted of nice tender chunks of beef in a flavorful coconut broth-no potatoes in this one, boss lady said it was really popular and she was right, the dish wasn’t much to look at but made up for it flavor wise.

For a 2 item combo with your choice of rice or noodles it will run you $6.49 and you will leave with a smile on your face and a full belly that’s for sure-if you’re a big eater they’ll give you extra rice for free which is a great thing.  If you find yourself in the area and looking for a lunch that is out of the norm for most food courts I’d give these guy’s a try.

Pho Express Ankor Noodle House

Down in the West End near the end of Robson Street sat a little french restaurant called The Chef And The Carpenter,it was a place that I never saw with a full house for all the years it was around, now it’s finally gone and it’s been turned into a little slice if Vietnam and it’s called Pho Express Ankor Noodle House.

The space has been completely gutted and changed form what was here before, now it’s like a little slice of Vietnam, bright neon, pink walls and numerous flat screens showing different programs, just like all Vietnamese places your condiments are all the table ready to go. But one thing is different about this place-they offer Thai as well as Cambodian cuisine so the menu s actually pretty varied

for this visit I stuck to the Vietnamese side of the menu.

It looks family run with the 2 younger sons working the front of house and mom is in the back cooking up a storm, the service is friendly and they are happy to answer any questions-like the one I had about what the dark sauce in the Sriracha container was-it’s a sweet thick soy with some other great flavors, I really enjoyed adding it to my dishes.

Food wise I started off with a complimentary pot of green tea

now on to the food:

Vietnamese Spring Rolls $3.95.  I started with the Vietnamese Spring Rolls after reading reader reviews recommending them, they were super crispy on the outside without being greasy and the filling was nice and flavorful and the dipping sauce wasn’t too sweet or to sour.

Rare Beef and Beef Ball Pho $7.25.  The pho here is quite good and really affordable, the broth is flavorful and very herbaceous.  The beef was melt in your mouth tender and the beef ball was tasty, I’m a fan of leaving the lime wedge in my soup after squeezing it so I get a nice citrus punch.

Pho Express is a welcome addition to my list of neighborhood soup spots when I’m craving something other than ramen and the menu is varied enough I’m sure I’m going to find lots more good eats to tell you about so stay tuned for a updated post.

Pink Elephant Thai

Pink Elephant Thai is the newest addition to the Thai House family of restaurants. The space on Alberni street location is the most modern of their restaurants and is eye catching to say the least.

The restaurant at this location has been open now for about 6 months and after reading some of the other bloggers post about Pink Elephant I was eager to try out there take on Thai seeing I’ve eaten at the Thai House before and had great traditional Thai cuisine.

On my hunt for lunch deals in Vancouver and after reading maryinvancitys post about the $10 lunch special and her experience I was looking forward to checking it out. The lunch special runs from 11:30am-4:30pm and you have 11 different dishes to choose from, specials include noodle dishes, curry’s, Thai fried rice dishes and traditional wok sautéed favorites. The above choices all come with 2 pieces of deep-fried chicken wings and a light salad also some of the dishes~the curry’s and wok sautéed items come with coconut jasmine rice and you get your choice of protein with the dishes~chicken, pork, beef or tofu.

Now on to the food!:

This is what comes with every lunch special, with wings I tend to like the drumette part because there is more meat and they are easier to eat. The wings are simply deep fried and could have used a marinade or something to add some unique flavor. the salad is iceberg lettuce and some carrot strands, the dressing is something sweet~I can’t pick out the ingredients totally but I will venture out on a limb and say that it is not house made~the salad would benefit from a homemade dressing and I hope after reading this they switch it up to something better.

Pad Thai, the pad Thai at Pink Elephant is one of the better I’ve had in Vancouver, it doesn’t have that sweet sauce that some other places use which is really nice and the noodles used here are a bit thinner. The chicken was cooked nicely but the tofu pieces could benefit from being deep fried to add another depth of flavor and texture. At the end of the day I really enjoyed this and would order it again.

Gai Pad Namman, Thai black bean sauce sautéed with pineapple, peppers, ginger and snow peas with chicken in this case served with coconut jasmine rice. I really enjoyed the Thai take on chicken with black bean sauce, the sauce was flavorful without being to salty and the fresh pineapple was a real nice sweet treat, the snow peas were nice and crisp and the chicken was moist and tender. The coconut rice was cooked perfectly and when eaten alone you can really pick up that hint of coconut.

This item I ordered from the menu and isn’t part of the lunch specials:

Vietnamese Spring Rolls $8, served with a fish sauce for dipping, I was really surprised by the size of these~they would easy feed 4 people and are packed with mushrooms and other veggies and pork as well I believe.

After having lunch here a few times I can’t wait to have a dinner here and try some of the other innovative dishes they have~OX tail curry is one of the things I’m looking forward to!.  If you’re looking for a solid cheap lunch check out Pink Elephant Thai.
