The Templeton-Quality Food,Snappy Service!

One place that packs them in every day is The Templeton Cafe on Granville Street.  The Templeton has occupied the space since the mid ’90′s but it’s been a diner since 1939 so the old school fixtures and vibe inside is totally authentic.

The place usually dies down around 1:30-2pm on the weekdays so it was a great time to visit and grab one of my favorite things and snap some pictures.

The shakes here are not to be missed, there made with hand scooped hard ice cream and whole milk, served in the mixing tin but glasses are available if you ask.  There thick and rich just like they were made back in the 50′s.

They also make custom made sodas as well, in the summer I’ve had many a cherry limeade made with fresh limes and cherry syrup and soda~crisp and refreshing it’s a diner classic.

This is the 777 Burger Platter, it’s a 100% certified lean organic beef on a sesame kaiser bun, all burgers come with mayo, lettuce, tomato, red onion and pickle and your choice of soup or mixed organic greens or house chipped fries or garlic mashed potatoes,  For $10.50 it’s a solid choice if you’re a burger lover.

The burgers here are really juicy and the organic beef is a great choice.

Fries here are classic skin on, thick cut chips, crisp and seasoned with some pepper as well as salt, you get a nice portion of them and they aren’t greasy.

If you find yourself downtown you should definitely check out The Templeton, it’s totally kid friendly and your sure to find something to satisfy your appetite with the varied menu that goes from breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The Spot Cafe

The west End and specifically Robson and Denman is packed with dining options that span the ends of the earth but if you’re looking for a regular mom and pop coffee shop The Spot Cafe fills that roll quite nicely.

It has all the usual sandwiches and salads that you would expect to find as well as wraps and Panini sandwiches.  The owners work right in the restaurant and are there to answer any questions you might have, I’m not sure how many generations of the Korean family work here but it looked like the owner’s elderly parents and his kids all work behind the counter and making the food so you really do get the vibe of a family operation.

They offer some drinks sweetened with cane sugar and can be found in these glass bottles~it’s just like the sprite from the 70′s before corn syrup started screwing everything up!

I feel like a good test for a place besides trying an omelet is to try a clubhouse!~just kidding~I love’s me some clubhouse sandwiches and that’s what I felt like having, they do there’s here with house roasted shredded chicken instead of the sliced stuff you find at most places.  I watched the older lady making this and it was she was delicately assembling a bomb ~a food bomb that is, she was precise in her placement of all the ingredients down to each piece of chicken.  I used to work above a Korea run sandwich shop on Homer Street for a couple of years and it was they had some of the most well prepared sandwiches I have ever had and this place reminds me of it completely.

Deacon’s Corner

Deacons Corner sits on the border of the Downtown Eastside and Gastown and is serving up classic diner food and all day breakfasts. I can remember eating here years ago when it was a generic white box and the food was pretty so so. Now with the same owner as Gastown’s Cobre being the proprietor of this joint the good food and solid service have arrived at The Deacons Corner.
On my first visit I had the classic clubhouse with fries. For $11.75 you get the usual suspects in a classic clubhouse-freshly roasted chicken, fresh tomatoes and lettuce and perfectly cooked bacon. This was one of the best clubhouses I’ve ever had and it’s simply because of the fresh ingredients. The fries here are hand cut and tossed with salt and pepper and are totally addictive.
On another visit I tried their daily special-a ham steak sandwich with bacon, Swiss cheese and cheddar with a bowl of potato, ham and leek soup for $10.00. This was a bit hit and miss for me, the soup was the off part, I got a few big chunks of bay leaf on my first few spoonfuls and consequently that’s all I tasted in the soup from then on. The sandwich on the other had was good and full of porky goodness with the thick cut fried ham steak and the bacon. It’s a classic diner sandwich at the end of the day.

The burgers here are where it’s really at, the toppings are classic and fresh and again I went with the fries.

Each burger here comes with 2 homemade little patty’s, the meat is cooked on a flat top grill and I chose to add cheese. For $9.75 this is the best and cheapest burger I’ve had in a while, when it’s put all together you get this:

The perfect burger!, they have a couple of specialty burgers on the menu that look really good so if you’re looking to satisfy that craving for a perfect cheese burger check out the Deacon’s Corner and they’ll hook you up right.

BG Urban Cafe Downtown Granville street location

Thing’s have changed over the years and it’s not for the best for BG or what I know them as-The Bread Garden.  I used to work for them in my early 20′s when they all were owned by The Spectra Restaurant group-the guys who owned Milestones,The Boat House, Chili’s and The Macaroni Grill.

The food was solid and the one thing you could count on was quality ingredients and the fact you got a good lunch or dinner for your money, in recent years they have become franchised out it’s looking like from the few different locations I’ve been to and some are better than others definitely.  What caught my eye was this:

it sounded like a great deal so I headed in and went up to order my soup and sandwich.  In the case they have all the sandwiches layed out and they all looked really good.

They have a few of the items on the menu still from when I worked there but I was going with something new that i haven’t had before.  I remember that the food for each store would come in during the middle of the night-basicly fresh from the big commissary kitchen they had in East Vancouver for sale the next day, now the kitchen is closed and I’m not so sure that things are brought in fresh everyday.

Mediterranean Chicken Sandwich half and Chicken Noodle Soup $6.99.  The whole sandwich was $7.99 and looked super fresh in the case but my half was LIMP like a wet noodle and was very sparse on toppings, when I went up to exchange my soup spoon for a clean one (the one I was given was coated in baked on crud) I noticed that all the sandwiches that were the variety I was having were all still in the case so the sandwiches for the deal they have are pre-made not in the case which leads me to question if they’re skimping on the toppings on these.  If I had this again at another BG cafe I’d have it not grilled-the lettuce goes slimy and gross.

This was the only choice of soup they had but hey-you gotta love chicken noodle soup right!  The broth was really thick in a bad way and also very salty, the noodles were mushy but the carrots were OK.  This is when I realized that I was eating something what was almost like a red can off the shelf with the slogan “mm good”

Mechanically separated chicken, I lost faith at this point and stopped eating my soup. Some might ask-what about the nice looking piece of bread on my plate with my meal, well,,,

it was the end of a loaf of bread to start with and second it was HARD AS A ROCK and obviously several days old.

This location of the BG Urban Cafe has lost touch with quality standards in my eyes and I’m generally pretty easy-going but I was completely disappointed with the quality of food and won’t be going back.

Cafe Medina Brunch

Located on the border of the downtown east side and the downtown core sits a small oasis named Cafe Medina. It’s one of the more popular places for brunch on the weekend and its small size makes for some long waits~in is case an hour and a half so Maryinvancity put our names down and we went off to check out the That Barista Thing put on by Blenz at the Vancouver Public Library.

With our return to the restaurant there was still a good line up outside but the staff come out constantly checking for people who just might have arrived and taking names and seating people so we didn’t have to wait to long~15 minutes or so.

Credit to Maryinvancity for this picture

The room is long and narrow and the tables are packed tightly, it does add to the atmosphere, there is also bar seating behind where we were. There known for really good waffles with gourmet dips~lavender and white chocolate is one of the more popular and also they make really nice latte’s here.

I had a med size regular cafe latte $4 and change, really nice and the sugar wasn’t needed.

Mary had a lavender latte $3.60, really nice latte art I must say and she really enjoyed this, they also do a couple other flavors.

Waffle $3.15 each with Fig Marmalade Dip $1

Waffle $3.15 with Dark Chocolate dip $1, Mary had the fig marmalade dip and I had the dark chocolate, I really enjoyed mine and tried Marys dip~I liked mine more but Mary enjoyed both. I found the chocolate to be nice and rich and it was nice and runny so it took to the waffle really well when dipping.

Omelette $12, the filling varies everyday, today it was vegetarian with roasted potatoes, cherry tomatoes and chanterelle’s and cheese. Each plate was served with bread, the screaming hot cast iron skillet is a great touch to serve food in, my eggs were light and fluffy and the roasted potatoes were a great touch, the mushrooms were lightly sautéed in butter and capped the dish off perfectly!.

Cassoulet $15, Mary went with the Cassoulet with the sunny side up eggs, it’s served with baked beans, french farmers sausage, double smoked bacon and andouille, the bread here was perfect for this:

That prefect runny yolk, the perfectly cooked egg, that was the case here and I must say that this dish isn’t to be missed, it was enjoyed hands down!.

At the end of the day Cafe Medina is worth the wait and the different dishes available will keep most people happy without a doubt.  A full review can be found on the Zagat.com site.

La Bretagne Creperie-Take A Break And Savor The Crepe’s

Some places are really hiding right in front of your eye’s I’m happy I stumbled upon this quaint hide creperie.  La Bretagne does a wide selection of savory and sweet crepe’s along with what I can describe as baked crepes~crepes and a couple of fillings with béchamel sauce and Swiss cheese and then baked golden brown~one of the gentlemen was eating one of these dishes and it caught my eye as well as delicious looking french onion soup.

Here’s what I have tried so far:

Cafe latte $2.95, they make a decent latte here and it stayed piping hot for a while~they heat the cups nicely with the espresso machine I think~nice touch.

Americano $1.95, a standard americano, nice crema on the espresso.

The Black Forest Ham, Mushroom and Béchamel sauce crepe with Swiss Cheese $8.75 + $2.95 for the Swiss

I really enjoyed this, the sauce had a nice amount of nutmeg in it and the ham was not to thin so you for a nice amount of it.

the crepe was nice and thin and crisp on the outside and the sauteed mushrooms added a nice earthy note to this rich crepe.  I could have licked my plate it was that good.

Normally I’d be finished up and would leave but I had to have another crepe so asked what the server would recommend and this is what I was presented with

Apple, Swiss cheese and cinnamon crepe $6.95

I was a happy camper with this bad boy!, she said most people get it for breakfast with sausage and eat it with maple syrup or light syrup they offer

I passed on the sausage and loved every bite, the apple filling is fresh and there’s nice big chunks of apple that’s buttery soft~it’s like apple pie without all the crust and the Swiss didn’t stand out actually.

Baked Crepes with Ham, Asparagus and Leek Fondue with Swiss cheese $10.75 + $2.95 for the leek fondue, I’ve never had baked crepes before and I really love them it turns out!.  They have a thing called leek fondue~sliced leeks cook down with cream and butter~magic!, the crepes are layered with blanched asparagus, béchamel sauce, leek fondue and ham topped with Swiss cheese and baked till bubbly and golden brown, again this is on my list of favorite items and is a must try if you come here.

Thierry Patisserie

Vancouver for the longest time has not had a selection of fine places for dessert and chocolates with the exception of Thomas Haas on W.Broadway the selection has been slim pickings till now.

Vancouver pastry chef extraordinaire Thierry Busset, former pastry chef at Cin Cin and West and Internationally with friend and fellow chef Gordon Ramsey at London’s La Gravoché spent years developing the concept for his new chocolaterie/patisserie. Now open, it’s appropriately named Thierry, part of the Top Table family of restaurants. Thierry is the perfect place to sit down for a coffee or espresso (made with the exclusive Thierry Espresso Blend), beer, cold house-pressed juice, or a glass of wine. Sandwiches are available at lunchtime and dinner as well as out of this world gazpacho and quiche but you’ll probably be ready for something sweet like I was, making the decision of what to have is the hard part, every product was so deliciously presented and is a real feast for the eyes.

With Thierry in the kitchen himself with staff at 5am every morning helping make the daily greatness including the puff pastry used in his delicious pastries, croissants and making the fresh bread for sandwiches really shows his commitment to quality. One thing that should be noted~prices here are on the high end~$6.95 on average for most deserts, Thomas Haas on average is $5-$6 each so don’t get sticker shock when you come in for a bite.

Here are a selection of items I’ve had so far:

The Lemon Tart $6.95, the lemon tart here is divine, the filling is tart and rich and the pastry is flaky and not soggy from the filling, if you’re looking for a great lemon tart this would be a definite recommendation. The Americano’s here are really good and the espresso used is nice and full-bodied.

Chocolate Succe Cake $6.95, hazelnut meringue, chocolate mousse and 70% chocolate ganache. The description I just gave is what is on the card at the bakery, this actually to me wasn’t a cake, the meringue was like layers in a coffee crisp texture wise so you don’t get any cake in this one and the mouse is pretty dense inside, it was really hard to eat and my first bite was like this:

the thing practically went flying off the plate because the chocolate was fully hard, it was more like a big candy bar and could be eaten with your hands. I noticed a girl who got this thinking like me it would be cake and she ran into the same issues like I did and looked pretty disappointed. At the end if the day the flavors were great but if I had to do it over again I would have chosen something else.

I grabbed a few items to go for later and here’s the selection I got:

Exotic Fruit Tart $6.95, selection of papaya, lychee, kiwi, strawberries, goose berrys, pineapple and blackberry with pastry cream filling.

This was a nice light tart and the pastry cream in this is really nice and rich, the fruit is fresh and the pastry is buttery and crisp.

Tiramisu $6.95. This is one to check out, it’s nice and creamy yet really light, the chocolate panels on the side are a nice touch.  It has 2 layers of creamy mousse and a thin layer of cake on the bottom and in the middle to represent the lady fingers.

If you craving some great dessert check out Thierry on Alberni street in downtown Vancouver.

Après-midi Premium Teahouse~A New Gastown Tradition

Après-midi Teahouse has opened there doors in the completely renovated Gaoler’s Mews corner (in the courtyard area behind L’Abbatoir), it’s fits right in to it’s newly renovated building yet the bones are that of one of the oldest in Gastown.

I was first made aware of Après-midi when they were a vendor at Bake for The Quake Japan disaster relief fundraiser that I volunteered at and I eagerly awaited their premium tea house to open ever since. I had the opportunity to finally meet fellow bloggers and cool people @maryinvancity and @br_webb I think it was the perfect place to come~they’ve created a space where you can come in and comfortably relax and get away from the hustle and bustle of busy Vancouver outside and catch up with good friends.

There are lots of comfy high back chairs to nestle back into and chat with friends, read a great book or surf the net on you laptop other iDevice and there is a large sectional area for larger groups.

The great thing about this place is they have a sniffing gallery of 70+ loose leaf tea’s that you can experience to get an idea of what kind of tea you want as well as being able to custom blend you own perfect cup or pot.

After you pick your tea you then get to watch it get brewed and steeped before your eyes on the ChaiWallah

it’s a unique product made to use with premium tea brewers and works with many on the market~when your tea is done steeping it pours thru the bottom of the BrewT brewer they sell on site and in my eyes is the perfect way to make tea and directly into your tea-pot or in this case over ice for an ice tea treat. They have a promo running right now~like them on Facebook and you can have a free tea of your choice, this is Mary’s and myself’s tea being steeped~I didn’t get any pics because it’s so darn good~I drank 1/2 of mine before I got to the table to sit down~its that darn good and refreshing~it was the lemon sorbet fruit tea~completely made of dried fruit and herbs. What I really was after is there $13 cream tea set that was already sold out for the day~that cream they have is pretty darn good so this post is going to be done over 2 days so I can get to experience the creme tea set for you guy’s.

So it’s the next day and I’m in need so some relaxation and some food, this time I went with a hot tea called Exotic Paradise, it’s a scented white tea that is pictured above in the big jar.

It’s a nice light tea that hit the spot for me, there is caffeine in this so don’t go drinking a ton of this stuff at once!. It has light floral notes and I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a light refreshing cup of tea.

Next up in the cream tea set is the selection of scones~cheese and cranberry~not together!

they fresh bake these when you order your cream tea set so there piping hot for you to enjoy, with the clotted cream and jam there a perfect combo~its my 1st time having clotted cream and I absolutely love it but my waist doesn’t!

this is the other star of the show, the fresh clotted cream and fruit preserves and honey, when you combine this with the scones you get this perfect bite:

So at the end of the day I think I had the most relaxing hour of my life here at Après-midi and am looking forward to many more!, I think cream tea set is the way to go here if you have some time to spend, for $13 you get a pot of tea of your choice, scones, jam, honey and the most sinful clotted cream and as a total bonus you get 50 grams of loose leaf tea of your choice!

in my case I went with the tea I had today and that was a $7 value right there!. If you would like to read what other people think of Après-midi check out what @maryinvancity has to say on her blog here

Save On Meats Diner-Pig’s Can Fly!

Yes pigs can fly!, the Vancouver icon Save On Meats has been reborn and I must say that it manages to keep the best parts and more have been added~the booths are wired for laptops and there’s WiFi !.

Originally opened in 1957 it went strong for all of my life~things that stand out in my mind from childhood are Woodwards and Save On Meats and the big pig sign, the business finally closed it’s doors in 2009 when Al DesLauriers retired. I know I was now very happy to see it close, it was a go to place for summer BBQ eats and good deals on roasts for family dinners for me and my friends and a kick ass burger for pennies on the dollar, here’s a video I found that documents the last day of the old Save On Meats uploaded by Davely70. The new owner Mark Brand is the owner of the higher end restaurant Boneta in Gastown as well as Sea Monstr Sushi, The Diamond, Sharks + Hammers and the Catalog Gallery, this Vancouverite was eager to see something good happen to the building and not let it become another victim to the wrecking ball. After a year and a half full renovation and more than $1,000,000.00 pumped into the facility it’s a welcome and needed business in the Downtown Eastside.

There is a lot going on in the space now, part of the four-story building is leased to SOLE Food, an urban farm, run by local residents, who use it as a distribution center for produce. Brand is planning a commissary kitchen for neighborhood residents who might wish to start a food business. The complex also includes a bakery for the restaurant and baked goods are also sold next door in the butcher shop. It’s one of the few places where almost everything is made in~house, the bakery grind their own flour for baking, using wheat from various farms on Vancouver Island and this ends up in the homemade killer bread, baked goods and the brioche hamburger buns.

The ice cream for the triple thick shakes and soda fountain ice cream deserts is all made in-house and is DIVINE!. I’ve had the chocolate, banana and the coffee shakes here and have been a happy camper every time.

Having the butcher shop as part of the building helps keep the costs down on the restaurant side so you can have a filling home cooked meal and it won’t break the bank and also lets the neighborhood residents get benefit of being able to get quality affordable meat and baked goods on a limited budget. At the front where the windows used to separate the 2 entrances is now a take out sandwich and quick eats window where you can get an all day breakfast sandwich on homemade biscuit for $1.50

The menu speaks for itself:

they do the big 3 here~breakfast, lunch and dinner here, opening at 7am and closing at 10pm you have ample time to get over and get some good eats, the addition of a $4 kids menu with dishes that all come with your or your little one’s choice of salad, fries, coleslaw or fruit cup and milk or juice. makes it kid friendly and headache free for mom and dad.

Now on to the food I’ve had:

the Save On Meats burger with bacon and cheese with fries on the side $6, yes that price is right~six bucks!, its made from ground chuck and flank steak, it has house made bacon, cheese and all the usually suspects on a brioche bun, any other place this would be $10-$12 easy. I really liked it and it was the first thing I tried on my initial visit, the burger was flavorful and juicy, the bun was buttery and a bit sweet. It’s like the original Save On Meats burger got grown up and refined during the building makeover and still remained dirt cheap~a deal that you can’t miss in my books. One issue that I do have is the fact that the burger patty was a lot smaller than the bun and is something I’ve seen in other bloggers pictures, it’s not a deal breaker in my eyes~just a minor grumble and the pickle on top made up for it!.

the Clubhouse with fries and house made coleslaw $7

the roasted chicken in this bad boy was moist, tender and in my eyes needs to me a meal on its own!, it’s a classic done right in my eyes and is a solid choice of a sandwich. One thing that I didn’t mention above in talking about the burger were the fries~there crisp and tender inside like great fries should be and I’ve found myself craving them at 11pm at night a few times last week. When I order this again I’m going have to insist my sandwich be on more regular bread~I don’t know if I got the 2 ends from a loaf but the outsides were hard and difficult to eat around the edges, also on this visit my sandwich order was taken but got lost in translation in the kitchen and wasn’t made for 30 mins when I finally had enough and asked WTF, even the waitress couldn’t understand what happened back there in the kitchen, at the end of the day I had a free coffee triple thick shake for my trouble (as pictured above).

the open-faced roasted chicken sandwich with house made brown gravy with fries and coleslaw $8, I really liked this sandwich, the bread was super soft in the middle where the chicken was placed and the crust had some slight chew to it-if my clubhouse was on this It would have been a perfect sandwich, the roasted chicken was moist and tender. The house made brown gravy was not overly salty and added the right moisture to this classic knife and fork sandwich. The coleslaw they make here is vinegar biased I think, all I know it’s not the gloopy mayo kind and I really love it!. One thing that I will say is that this menu item needs to have another piece of bread with chicken and gravy on it to be a open-faced chicken sandwich and to fill you up, I was still hungry and could have easily downed a burger or a couple of pieces of pie from Acme Cafe 2 doors down from Save On Meats.

The Damn Fine Ruben $7, this was ordered by a lady sitting next to me, she asked the waitress to surprise her with a sandwich that is killer and this magnificent treat was brought to her, the sandwich lived up to expectations of something great and I think I’ll have to have one of these next time I’m in.

The Meatloaf plate with Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes and fresh peas & carrots $9, classic meatloaf with gravy minus the tomato soup top like mom used to make. This plate comes with your choice of fries or buttermilk mashed potatoes and fresh carrots & peas, the mashed potatoes are killer here and are not to me missed. I really enjoyed most of my meatloaf, it has a nice rich beef flavor and the gravy is great without being salty, the one issue I ran into was 3/4 of the way through someone next to me pointed that some of my meatloaf looked pretty pink and boy was she right!, the waitress took my plate back to the kitchen and returned a few minutes later, I was informed that one of the owners looked at it and wasn’t comfortable serving it, she offered me something else off the menu so I chose a sandwich, when she returned from putting in my new order she told me that they use nitrate in the meatloaf~or as she said “salt peter”, I was relieved that I didn’t eat undercooked meat but then I was kinda pissed at the fact I was fed nitrates when I wasn’t expecting them to be in this dish.

the Corned Beef Sandwich on Caraway Rye $7, after my meatloaf incident this is what I ordered, it solidified the fact I have to try the Damn Fine Ruben because the corned beef here is really good!, the mustard cut the richness of the meat just fine and the bread used is really good, it had caraway seeds and they add a great flavor to this and the ruben.

Sitting near the cakes and pies is a dangerous thing, I watched as this beauty was brought out by the pastry chef

the Save On Meats version of a Black forest Cake $6, I didn’t have any of this but it looked damn good and the chocolate glaze on top added to its decadence. One thing I did have a piece of but didn’t get a photo was one of their chocolate chip, macadamia nut and BACON cookies!, the lady next to me ordered some to go, they weren’t my thing~too crisp and crunchy and I didn’t get any bacon flavor.

I’d say that once all the opening kinks get worked out Save On Meats will enjoy another long life in its original home and will be feeding a whole new generation to come. Mark Brand you have done a great thing for the community and me and a lot of other Vancouverites thank you!.

Finch’s Tea and Coffee House

Located at Homer and Pender St is the Vancouver landmark Finch’s Tea and Coffee House.  It’s been there for as long as I can remember and busy all the time and I can see what and am kicking myself in the ass for not finding this place sooner.

It’s a mix of shabby worn tables and chairs and antique glass that adds the old world vibe to this place and the mixed crowd of young and old enjoying their sandwiches, tea and coffee

With a selection of sandwiches, salads and drinks there is something for everyone I would think

menu image taken from there website

lots to choose from

One of my favorite sandwiches here is one of the most popular~the pear, prosciutto, blue brie and toasted walnuts $8.75

It has to be one of the best combination of ingredients I’ve ever had in a sandwich and is also offered in a salad form~YUMMO!

This is one of those sandwiches where you are ment to get a bite of everything in each much~all the ingredients work together to give you a balanced bite enjoyable bite, the balsamic vinegar cuts the richness of the meat and cheese and the pear adds a great sweet crispness to the sandwich and all the big ingredients.

The Gipsy Salami baguette $7.50, the other type of meat offered here is salami, this peppered beauty is on the same bread, served with lettuce and fresh tomatoes that are salt and peppered then packed with gipsy salami and pesto mayo is the food lube for the baby.

When I said the sandwich was packed with salami I wasn’t joking!, the meat was folded into triangles which ultimately lead to the meat exploding out after I took my 1st bite so I ended up eating some meat by itself and filling what I had left back into the bread so this one was more pretty looking and tasted great but was a hot mess to eat.

If you’re in the area Finch’s is a great place to check out for a great lunch or brunch on the weekends and all sandwiches can be made to go.
