Siddhartha’s Nirvana from VANEATS.ca

The new VANEATS.ca package has got me heading back to my old neighborhood once again.  Kevin and Billy have teamed up with Siddhartha’s Indian Kitchen to bring us Siddhartha’s Nirvana.

It’s a 7 item dining package that goes for $16.  It brings you a taste of some of the restaurants best dishes and one unique item that is only available for VANEATS.ca diners.

The menu they have put together is as follows:

  1. Monsoon Scallops, seared with mango & coconut – an EXCLUSIVE VANEATS.ca appetizer
  2. Chicken Tikka Masala, tender chicken pieces marinated in yogurt and spices cooked in our tandoori oven
  3. Vegetable Pakora, batter fried marinated mixed veggies
  4. Butter Chicken, the classic favourite – boneless marinated chicken pieces cooked in a rich tomato cream sauce
  5. Baigan Bharta, smoked, roasted eggplant cooked with tomato, onion, cilantro, spices & a hint of lemon
  6. Onion and Cilantro Naan, fresh-baked, buttered naan with fresh onion & cilantro
  7. Ras Malai, a heavenly Indian delicacy in light milky syrup made from the purest form of cottage cheese

The restaurant is a small, cozy place and was totally packed when I made my visit at lunchtime.  They offer table seating along with seating at the bar.  A big flat screen is on the wall behind the bar and they play the Canucks games when there playing.

I love the appy trios that VANEATS.ca puts together.  This one has a couple of standard items along with the exclusive dish.  Starting on the left we have the classic Chicken Tikka Masala, Vegetable Pakora’s make up the middle of the plate and the Monsoon Scallops make up the end of the plate.  I really enjoyed the chicken tikka and the vegetable pakora’s but I didn’t dig the scallop dish-they were cooked too much and were tough but the seasoning and spices used were tasty.  The dish is also served with a cilantro dip and a tamarind dip, the cilantro dip was really good and had a bit of heat but the fresh cilantro used really stood out.

The package comes with a couple different curry’s, basmati rice and naan.  You get Butter Chicken and Baigan Bharta as the curry choices.  The butter chicken was really good, the dish was loaded with nice chunks of tender chicken, the sauce was more creamy here than the tomato based versions I’ve had lately.  The baigan bharta was my favorite item of the package.  It’s a smoked eggplant curry that has nice depth of savory flavor, the eggplant is shredded into pretty much a pulp and mixed with spices and stewed on the stove top.  The rice in the dish was nicely cooked, the chopped tomato’s and herbs were a nice touch.  The naan was good but they were handicapped by one factor on my visit-the tandoori oven stopped working and was just started back up right before I got there so my naan could have been cooked more.   Besides that one fact it was tasty and they gave me mine topped with paneer cheese which was a nice touch.

The dessert is something that I have never had before in my Indian cuisine eats, it’s called Ras Malai-a sweet dish found in the Indian subcontinent consisting of sugary cream-colored balls of dough and a creamy sweet liquid, the malai.  It’s made from the same cheese curds used to make paneer but it’s soaked in a sweet flavored milk and served with mango’s.  I really liked this, it was light and not overly sweet, there was a hint of rose and of cardamom as well in the dessert.

Mango lassi’s were also enjoyed at lunch but aren’t part of the package but I’d recommend trying one, there creamy and tangy-the perfect compliment to an Indian meal.

The VANEATS.ca Siddhartha’s Nirvana dining package goes on sale on April 25th, 2012 at 7AM till June 25th, 2012 if they don’t all sell out before that.  The package costs $16 and is a full meal for 1 or perfect to share between 2 people if you’re ordering something else off the menu.  You can Get your dining package by clicking here.

Viva La Rocca Dining Experience

The guy’s over at VANEATS.ca really are making it a Delish December and it’s not going to be one to forget. The 3rd dining experience offered up by VANEATS.ca is at the La Rocca Italian Restaurant on Commercial Drive in East Vancouver and it’s appropriately named “Viva La Rocca!”

“La Rocca, located in the heart of multi-ethnic Commercial Drive, has been providing authentic Italian Cuisine since 1986.

Discover homemade fresh taste with La Rocca’s timeless food creations. The aesthetic atmosphere is serene, with an artistic architectural design and Italian decor.”

It is with great pleasure to congratulate La Rocca on their Silver Anniversary! After 25 years in the making since 1986, La Rocca is nothing short of a classic, well prepared Italian dining experience that encourages one to “mangia mangia”! La Rocca is known as a hidden gem in the Commercial Drive area. You can expect a cozy atmosphere to share with your family or a romantic nook for an intimate date. To compliment the European decor and architectural design, a variety of live music from latin guitar to jazz is often played on weekends under candle light dinner.

This time around VANEATS.ca have put together a 4 course dining pass for 2 that includes some new menu offerings and some of La Rocca’s best classic dishes off the menu for $28, the dining pass goes on sale December 8th,2011 to January 8th,2012 and package’s are limited and sell out really fast~it’s a great price and would make a great gift with the holidays coming up.

The guy’s at VANEATS.ca hooked me up with a complementary dining pass and I was happy to get to try out this dining package before it hit the streets, I took @MaryInVancity along with me to check out this experience.

We were served complementary homemade focaccia bread with balsamic and olive oil for dipping, it was soft and flavorful and was the perfect vessel for the next course and the 1st up in the Viva La Rocca package:

We began with a delicious appetizer, Prosciutto Marinato e Arancia, Italian ham marinated in herbs, with orange and thinly sliced garlic, delicately drizzled with olive oil. What is there not to love about a thinly sliced melt in your mouth pork product!, now pair it with the citrus from the orange and delish olive oil and you have killer app- appetizer that is!, this is where the bread came in handy to deliver this to our salivating mouths.  This is one of the new dishes added by Chef Guzman to the menu.

Next up on the menu is the pasta course, Fettuccine con Gamberi, tiger prawns in a light cream sauce.  This was a good pasta, the shrimp were cooked nicely and the fettuccine was al dente.  The sauce was creamy but not cheesy so it went with the prawns really well.

The meat course is next up, Pollo Ripieno al Marsala, chicken breast stuffed with sun-dried tomatoes and basil, in the famous sweet Marsala wine sauce and sided with a nice wedge of grilled Radicchio Rosso.  This was my favorite item of the night, the chicken was moist and the sauce and filling totally complimented each other, the savouriness of the sauce balanced out sweetness of the sun-dried tomato filling.  The radicchio was grilled but still maintained some of the bitterness is known for and it was drizzled with a balsamic reduction that added a sweet touch.

Lastly we ended our meal with their Homemade Tiramisu, espresso drenched cake layers with a mouth-watering Mascarpone cheese mousse, topped with a dusting of cocoa.  This was a solid tiramisu and was a generous portion for two, the creamy filling and soft cake were great yet very light.  The plate was decorated with a drizzle of chocolate sauce and chocolate covered espresso beans garnished the plate.

We had a great time checking out La Rocca and the “Viva La Rocca” dining pass from VANEATS.ca, check out the details below if you would like to win yourself a Viva La Rocca Dining Pass:

Le Do Vietnamese

The Hastings Sunrise area of Vancouver has so many diverse dining gems-The Red Wagon Cafe, Campagnolo Roma, El Barrio and Le Do Vietnamese.

Le Do is doing what good Vietnamese places do right-great pho and other classic Vietnamese dishes at a great price. The seating is tight inside but the table turn over is pretty good so you wont wait long and it’s also closed on Wednesday’s and cash only.

On my visit I was still craving pho from not filling my craving at Phnom Penh I was eager for a bowl here and I also went with some prawn salad rolls with pork but I’ve also been told the Banh Mi’s are really good.

The salad rolls were $5.50 for 2 large rolls cut in half, the filling was roasted pork, shrimp, vermicelli and shredded lettuce and cucumbers. The pork was nice and sliced really thin, they served here with a bowl of hoisin, sriracha and peanuts that you stir all together for dipping.

This is my favorite type of pho-rare beef with beef ball, I don’t like tendons and tripe so this hits the spot quite nicely. The broth here has a great depth of flavor and isn’t heavy or to MSG laden, the noodles were cooked perfectly and for $5.95 for the medium size you can’t go wrong with that deal. The broth was also piping hot which is really important when your dealing with rare beef.

I’d say so far this and the pho place at the end of Robson that I posted about here have the best bowls of soup I’ve had so far and should not be missed if you find yourself in the Hastings and Nanimo area of Vancouver.

Phnom Penh

Phnom Penh has been serving up great Vietnamese and Cambodian dishes on the border of East Van and Downtown.  With one of the biggest menus I’ve ever seen at a restaurant I was kinda overwhelmed with what to get!

I was dining alone so some portions of the dishes I wanted to try were a bit on the large side so I’m going to have to wait to get back with some friends for a chow down and the fact on this visit it was the day before there 2 week vacation so I couldn’t get any pho.

Food wise I went with a combo plate that consisted of a couple great items like Vietnamese spring rolls, shrimp on sugar cane and a skewer of grilled pepper beef all for $12.

The Vietnamese spring rolls were OK, there filled with veggies and meat.  The filling was seasoned nicely and tasted great but they were a bit greasy.  At the end of the day I think if they were fresh out of the fryer I would have enjoyed them more.

This is the shrimp on sugar cane, it’s a shrimp mousse formed around a piece of sugar cane and then deep fried.  It was a firm texture to it

and wasn’t light and fluffy like I thought it would be but it tasted OK dipped in the spring roll sauce.

The grilled pepper beef skewer was really good and I could eat a plate of them, the thin slices of beef were nice and tender and had a nice grilled flavor, the slices were separated with pieces of onion and red peppers.

This being my 1st visit to Phnom Penh I already cant wait to come back and eat some of their famous crispy chicken wings and try the butter beef, I saw a few great looking dishes coming out of the kitchen on my visit and my mouth is already watering.

Nuba

One local place that has really branched out across the city is Nuba, serving Mediterranean and Lebanese meat and vegetarian cuisine, with locations in East Van at the new Waldorf Hotel, downtown/Gastown area at Hastings and Cambie st and in the downtown/West End area at Seymour and Davie st. The design of all the restaurants is really nice but each location does have individual flavor, the location just off Davie street is modern and clean but the location is really small-were talking seating for 10-12 people so takeout is a good option for this location, the location at Cambie and Hastings in the lower level of a historic office building, there are some windows but natural light is at a minimum, they have some beautiful Turkish style brass lamps that add a beautiful feel to the room

I see they have tons if tea light candles so I can imagine that candlelight is the other main form of lighting in this location in the evening hours, there is tons of seating at this location and some large tables for large groups and a back room under an archway that has couches that line the walls for casual relaxed drinking and eating. Finally the newest location in the recently renovated and relaunched Waldorf hotel is in the tiki lounge that is in the hotel, the whole room is wood and really funky, I have yet to visit location but they I’ve heard really great things about it. And after reading their website I also see they is a location at Main st and 3rd Ave in East Van.

The one thing that is the same at all locations is the food and fresh juice’s available, they also have daily specials for main plates, juices and soups. I know the location at Hastings and Cambie serves booze and I’m also sure the one at the Waldorf does as well but not at the Seymour street location. The diner menu has alot more options that all sound really good, I’ve only dined at lunch but some of the items I’ve had are available on the dinner menu.

Every time I’ve eaten here I’ve always left a happy camper~eating a meat dish or all vegetarian, the baba ghanoush here is some of the best I’ve had and is a must try, it comes also on the La Feast platter with killer hummus as well. The pictures in this post are from both the downtown locations so enjoy.

On my 1st visit here I had the Lamb Kibbeh plate $12~grilled grain-fed halal meat patty with vegetables, pine nuts, burghul and aromatic spices. All plates come with your choice of organic brown rice or roasted potatoes (my plate here had both for some reason?), hummus, hot sauce made with jalapeno’s and olive oil, green salad, homemade pickle, tabbouleh~the kind I love~with some bulgar tossed in and pita bread for dipping. All dishes come with tahini except lamb~that comes with tzatziki.

This lamb was ground really fine the patty was very dense and was unfortunately kind of dry so I’m glad the tzazaki sauce was there to add some moisture and also it could have used some more herbs inside for more flavor, all the other items on the plate were really good and have been fresh and consistent with every meal I’ve had.

Here is what I had on my last visit, the falafel plate with brown rice $10.50

I’m a sucker for great falafel and Nuba makes some yummy ones, there hot and fluffy on the inside and golden and crisp on the outside and the brown rice here has a real nutty creamy taste to it that I really love-it almost tastes like tahini is mixed in

the homemade pickle has a beautiful pink hue to it and has a faint taste of beets that are the source of that pink color. The tabbouleh is a fresh addition to there plates and has a nice zip from fresh lemon juice.

next up is the najib’s special plate $11

The najib’s special is made from a vegetable that I really don’t like normally~cauliflower, I could eat tons of this but I save it for a treat every now and then, the cauliflower is brown and delicious but don’t be fooled-it’s not baked like you would think, instead they guild the lily here by DEEP FRYING it!.

it’s all golden brown and crispy on the outside with a nice lemony zip

and tender and moist on the inside!, they provide a side of tahini for dipping in and man it’s so good!

Quality, flavorful food is the call of the day here and the service is good and the staff is very knowledgeable so if you have any questions feel free to ask.

The Red Wagon Cafe

Places that really hit home with me are the roadside cafe’s and mom and pop type places that were a fixture for me growing up in East Vancouver. Usually every weekend growing up as far as I could remember heading out with my dad for the day and we’d hit one of the numerous cafe’s on Hastings St or Kingsway and chow down!

With the resurgence of cafe’s and comfort food and dishes that are made from whole ingredients that we all can pronounce the Red Wagon Cafe is a perfect fit in the Hastings Sunrise neighborhood, for years before it was a dodgy cafe serving Chinese and Canadian food then owner Brad Miller got a hold of the place and the Red Wagon was born!. It’s been embraced by the community and the lower mainland I’d say, the reviews have all been positive because the crew at this joint are putting out cafe classics and items with a twist~pulled pork pancakes with Jack Daniels maple syrup is just an example!.

I’ve been in a few times~basically whenever I’m in the area I try to stop there and at the East Village Bakery, the menu has changed a bit from opening but its been all for the better, dessert and dinner are being served now as well as beer and wine. I haven’t been yet but brunch here is really popular and some of the egg dishes are top-notch, the chef makes his own bacon and pastrami so you get quality all the way around.

here are some of the items I’ve sampled from the menu and was able to get pictures of

big chunks of beef short rib with market veggies on top of buttery egg noodles

this rich and delicious carrot soup is sweet and creamy with the cumin to add a savory note that is perfect

delicious slices of ham and swiss cheese toasted on the flattop and smothered in homemade béchamel sauce and broiled till perfection

Bowen Island lager~light and refreshing on a hot day

some of the other items I’ve had but didn’t get pictures of are the pulled pork sandwich with fries, the clubhouse sandwich and the Reuben sandwich that is a house specialty. The test of a good cafe or diner are the fries and lets just say that here they are perfect!, crisp and skin on lightly salted, they have chili cheese fries on the menu that look pretty killer that I still wanna try~that’s the kinda place the Red Wagon is~you have at least 3 or 4 great options to have so choosing can be tough.

With the change happening in the area the Red Wagon is a perfect fit and will be slinging killer eats for a longtime to come, it’s totally kid friendly and the service is great~there ready to pour you a cup of coffee and grab you a paper so come on down and get fed some killer home cooked food.

The East Village Bakery

The area known as Hastings Sunrise has been undergoing some what a revitalization in the last couple years. With additions to the neighborhood like The Red Wagon Cafe,El Barrio and now Campagnolo Roma , The East Village Bakery has found its home in the neighborhood and the residents seem to have fallen in love as well as the rest of Vancouver with the delicious baked goods that Lucia Tam and Bobby Chick make with loving care everyday.

Unable to find quality baked goods in the area they opened the East Village Bakery and quite honestly with all the changes in the area it really is like a little village in the area and the residents are very proud of that. The smell of fresh-baked artisan breads and pastries fill the block so you know you in the right place-also the bakery sign hanging is the other give away!. The shelves here are constantly replenished thru the day with different treats so you always have a great selection to choose from, everything is preservative and additive free,on certain day’s of the week they bake spelt and kamut products and take special and custom orders by email and phone and that’s the beauty of dealing with a local owner operated business like this~some of the best customer service I’ve ever received.

The specialty’s of the house are breads, cookies, pies, bunt cakes and some of the best brioche and challah bread in the city, most items are available in large and small sizes if you give them a call. The kalamata olive and cheddar ciabata is always a winner as well as the cheddar fougasse.

The items that really get me salivating are the deserts!, Callebaut chocolate is used in all of their croissants, bunt cakes and lava cookies resulting in AWESOMENESS!!

I’ll be putting up a gallery below of all the treats that I’ve had and managed to get pictures of. The bottom line is Lucia & Bobby are putting out superior handmade baked goods and I’d recommend taking a trip to visit the East Village bakery yourself so you can also indulge in the delicious treats they make, everything is priced as it should be considering the quality of product your getting and the labor involved in producing these delicious treats.
